Tesla hints at when its $35,000 Model 3 will actually arrive

Tesla released its first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday, and hinted at when the $35,000 base model of its Model 3 sedan will become available.

In the report, Tesla said it expects to start making around 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week "in about two months," so around July. After the company reaches that threshold, it said it will make new options available to Model 3 customers. "After achieving a production rate of 5,000 per week, we will begin offering new options such as all-wheel-drive and the base model with a standard-sized battery pack," the company said.

Tesla states on its website that it would roll out the option for the standard battery Model 3 in late 2018, but it was unclear when the company would actually begin production given the delays.

The Model 3, which launched in July, is touted as a more affordable alternative to Tesla's high-end sedan, the Model S, with a $35,000 base price that would make it competitive with mass-market electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. But customers who have the option to configure their Model 3 can only purchase the long-range version with rear-wheel drive, which starts at $49,000.

In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would likely start producing the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, version of the Model 3 in July. Musk was responding to a Twitter user who claimed his Model 3 "has been sitting in the configuration for months waiting on" the dual-motor option and asked when Tesla would start producing it.

Tesla had planned to make 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of 2017 when it launched the vehicle in July, but it adjusted that goal after making just 2,425 Model 3s during the fourth quarter.

They can make 5000 a week, but can they sell them?

BEWARE OF BUYING A *USED* ELECTRIC CAR

Not a problem.

Assume you'll replace the battery, and factor that into the price.

A co-worker ordered a Tesla and was told there was 1 year wait. I told him it will be longer as the one he ordered was taken off the line and strapped on a rocket and is now heading towards the asteroid belt. It will be back in earth orbit in the year 2525.

Reminds me of the joke about the Russkie back in the USSR days who ordered a new car.

My bet is that this is nothing less than trying to keep the people who have already put a down payment on a model 3 from deciding that Tesla is selling vaporware.

The headline didn’t match the fact of my neighbor’s Tesla 3 in his driveway. Then read the $49k model only part.

"Like needing a two-universal socket rig to remove a spark plug."

LOL Some people just aren't suited to working on their own cars.

"Like being twenty miles out from town and finding out that neither your 1” or 1 1/4” socket will fit the failed block temperature sender."

Unlike today's cars, a failed temperature sending unit would not shut down a '60s or '70s era domestic automobile. Now if it's a deserted stretch of road and your sweetie is sitting beside you, yeah the car may need a little time to cool off...

Well for starters Tesla did not pay back from profits. Musk contributed one hundred mill and stick price rise yielded the rest

My mistake. It was the oil pressure sender.

Thinking back on it, I seem to recall that Ford required a 1 1/16 And GM required a 15/16.

Unless he has more than 1 assembly line he’s not getting more than about 250 per day.
