I learned about that mask on the back of the head ruse in a story about a tiger who figured out that it was a ruse. Cats be dangerous!

LOL, I don't know why, but I completely imagined a Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoon, where a tiger, follow some bushmen in the tall grass, suddenly realizes they are masks and thinks to himself:

"Hey! What kind of cruel trick is this?"

I believe it’s Bend Oregon and North Bend Washington.

My second cousin, his wife and two young daughters want to move to Bend, Oregon. They now live in Corvallis.

I have an antique magazine ad from an old “Sunset” magazine circa 1910 that calls the town “North Bend, Oregon.” I wonder if the Oregon North Bend dropped the “North” at some point after that?

Cougars can be dangerous, especially if they’ve had too much to drink.

LOL Yep, those masks do have a Far Side bent to them. A little surreal.

Apparently they work very well. But not 100%.

The best bet for the two bikers in this story would have been to stick together, side-by-side/back-to-back, and fight. Sad but you’re right about atavistic instincts taking over.

Actually with a cougar or a lone black bear you are supposed to make yourself as big as you can with a stick or similar because they won’t confront a large aggressive opponent, usually.

Yes, on the coast.

Meanwhile, here in arid southeast Washington, at least two cougars (animal kind) have made their way to our community, probably navigating along the Yakima River. About 160 miles from the attacks.

Here in WA State, Rangers I know tell me that black bears usually are scared off by yelling and hand/arm waving unless there’s a Momma bear nearby with cubs.

I asked why take a risk? Sling a shotgun over the shoulder and if necessary, just shoot in front of them to scare them off. That’s what I would do.

Then a hunter friend said that might be Ok but further up North into BC it wouldn’t always work even if the bullet hit them.

I said “Huh?”

He said he meant with Grizzlies (Canadian Brown Bears), shotguns don’t work. It just angers them and they still charge you, your life is over, nothing you can do.

I tried to argue saying but what about a kill shot with say a 30 Ought 6? He said with Grizzlies they will still kill you before they die if they die. They become adrenalized and they still charge you. They will kill you if it’s the last thing they do.

I asked, “what about flash grenades?”. He said “nope”.

Half joking, “What about flamethrowers?” Nope again.

He told me there was one way that was effective at getting a Grizzly to back off and leave you alone, that it had nothing to do with guns, any gun.

I asked him to tell me but he said he would after I watched a video back in town. He said I needed to believe guns would not work most every time. He said the bear might die but you would die first.

When we got back to town he texted me a link to this video and wrote that these guys were lucky:

https://youtu.be/d-SK1Aok57w?t=350

I watched the video and called him to say “Ok, so a gun no matter how big is not guaranteed to stop a Grizzly. What will?”

His answer, “UDAP Pepper Spray”.

When I go hunting/fishing in BC, I’m taking all the pepper spray I can hold. Of course, if I come face to face with a Grizzly standing 10-foot high at 700-lb, I will need nerves of steel to remain close enough to shoot a can of pepper spray in its direction. I’ll be saying my prayers at the same time.

I am told Cayenne pepper spray makes a grizzly bear confused, sneezing, snorting, retreating. The pepper spray is not sensed as an attack like a gunshot is so the bear won’t get aggressive, just confused and repulsed. It is said to work almost every time.

The body might be 40 feet up in a fir tree?

Sad. Not much one can do when riding down a logging road (or whatever) and a cougar comes out of nowhere. I guess, other than to just sit on the couch and watch National Geographic.

Although, several years ago they stopped hunting them with dogs and trapping. I’m guessing that their populations have grown.

LOL, where did I see that recently. Was it a commercial? (Something like “Why Cats can’t be in Special Forces” or something like that?)

I do want to try to remember someone did get killed in this incident. I just got off track and I forgot it ISN’T some “Internet thing”. Someone did get killed and another injured.

I forget sometimes.

I wonder if now that they have Ghost Peppers and stronger peppers if they can improve on the Cayenne pepper spray.

A tiny bite of one of those peppers will have you foaming at the mouth and vomiting.
