There’s probably a business model linked to pepper spray improvement. And also a delivery system that can be carried on a pack or belt. I would really like to be a good ten yards away if I had to launch a spray.
Someone here on FR posted something about those two either earlier this year or late last year. Anyway, I spent awhile reading about what happened and the best reports state there is only one recording and it was given to the guy's ex-girlfriend. She states that it will never be published in any way. All the supposed audio on Youtube and other sites are fakes.
I will be fully retiring soon to my old family home in northern Michigan. I now carry my Smith Model 29, 6" barrel, whenever I go out onto our property in the woods. There are many black bear and now confirmed cougars.
All the way through the 80s I could just go out there to shoot, hunt, or cut firewood without having to worry about getting attacked by predators.
Will if you are willing to pay the price almost anything is possible.
The SCBA bottles we have at work are aluminum wrapped with fiberglass. They are pressurized to 4000 PSI. I would wager that 4K PSI would shoot a stream to 10 yards.
Such a sprayer would be heavier than a typical spray can but would reach way out there.
Change the wrap to Kevlar or other hi-tech fiber and you could get higher pressures. But also raise the cost.
And joggers are fast food.
The 6in barrel helps, but do you find the second shot a little hard to get off accurately?
With just Black bear and cougar, a .357 is plenty.

I work in grizz country everyday in northern Alberta. We have the most grizz per square mile than anywhere else in North America. We have big boys. I always have my 308 with fusion hunting rounds loaded up. Your friend is a few fries short of a happy meal. I do not, I repeat I do not carry spray. You’re more likely to incapacitate yourself than the bear, and I’ve seen grizz charge right through it and not care. I’ll trust good ol physics thanks.

We have tons of cougar here too. One we got last year stalking an operator was 220lbs. Big guy. Dogs are a good thing to have, especially coonhounds.
Must be the ones we have here then. These bulls are generally over 1000, and we’ve had world record antlers harvested here. Also explains why so many Americans like to hunt up here.
I don't have any problems with any of the shots, per se, although I shoot much slower when I use double action because I do not want to pull the weapon off target. Shooting slower worries me if I have an encounter with a large predator. I use 255 grain, semi-jacketed flat nosed bullets that I reload myself. I found they are very accurate and will penetrate bear without much problem.
Last week I won a bid for a Sig P220, 10mm. I will start carrying that as I will be able to fire single action every shot without having to cock a hammer, thus maybe saving myself if I am being charged. I should get it in the mail, through my FFL dealer, sometime next week.

I imagine the fright they had and they panicked. They had 2 bikes they could have used as weapons by bashing the animal with. The attack must have happened like lightning.

That reminds me of a job up in Alaska a few years ago. We had an Indian with us just for bear protection. He’d always say something like “Yeah - I seen him coming up - but then he hear you and circled around.”
He was more concerned about the wild dogs they had up there. Grizzlies, unless you surprise them or you get come close to their cub, typically wouldn’t bother you. (Just working we make enough noise). “But them dogs - they’re just evil. They’ll kill you just so they can eat your sandwich!”
We were there for a week and he killed three wild dogs. And THAT was wilderness - probably 100 miles to the nearest gravel road via land. (4 miles by water).
We always do our best to try to stay alive. I carry a large container of bear spray and a 12-guage with large sabot slugs. I guess a bear will often bluff a charge, but if they don’t, I don’t think one has much of a chance when they come busting out of the brush and you notice them when they are 50 feet away. (Especially while dealing with other tasks).
It is sure nice when the client provides an Indian guide to watch over us. (Fun to hear his stories too. Tall tales I’m guessing most of them are that he tells the white man.)

Of course that made me question some of his other stories like the bears that would come near and shy away. Except we saw enough bear poop in the area and would see the occasional bear at a distance that he was more believable on those accounts.
To be clearer, a grizzly can be killed with a gun but not always right away. They can charge after they are shot. There seem to be many accounts of this so it’s safe not to assume the animal is dead or incapable of attacking after shooting it.
Those fellows in the video took a chance the bear was dead. It was, they were lucky. It wasn’t necessary to doo what they did. Hunters say to wait 30 minutes in dead silence before approaching a shot grizzly. I think that’s a good warning.

Previous to the army I have many years of experience guiding, mountaineering, ice climbing, rock climbing, etc. Kootenays, bugaboos, North cascades what have you. All in all, over 20 years experience dealing with bears, cats, wolves and the very odd wolverine, disagree all you like, I know what I’m about.
It actually drives me when I see some leaf licker in an outdoor store buying his bear “defense” in the form of a spray. I try to educate folks, but you can’t say anything to to dissuade them.
