Back in the day us old farts called it a “10-speed”.

Authorities found the mountain lion / cougar standing over the body of the dead biker.

Sounds kind of like a tomcat sitting by the back door with a dead animal beside it.

#50: "why is there a “recovery mission” if they already found his dead body?"

I had to read that twice too. It seems to me they found part of the guy, but a major part is missing. Perhaps the head. Or maybe they found the head but the body is missing. In any case, I was under the impression that not all of him was there.

“Timmy Treadwell and his girlfriend were eaten alive by bears. Sound recording of the attack, too.”

Treadwell was an alleged recovered addict. Gotta wonder if he substituted the adrenaline rush from his close encounters with bears for the drugs he used to take. Whatever his motivation, his addiction to insane risks caused his girlfriend’s death.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Treadwell
Treadwell also frustrated authorities by refusing to install an electric fence around his camp and refusing to carry bear spray to use as a deterrent. In fact, Treadwell had carried pepper spray with him and had resorted to using it at least one time, but wrote that he had felt terrible grief over the pain he perceived it had caused the bear and refused to use it on subsequent occasions.[9]

you are supposed to freeze, then slowly walk backwards away from the cougar so it will not feel threatened.

As I suggested elsewhere on the thread, that might or might not work, but running will definitely get you killed.

When I was a kid I did not know what a 10 speed was.

We had a Western Flyer and my Brothers and I rode that thing for many years. Our Cousin gave us two old Whizzer motors and we made one working one from them.

It actually ran really well.

Stopped at the McDonald’s in North Bend every time on our drives from Smokey Point, WA to Spokane when our daughter was in law college at Gonzaga U. I love that drive through Snoqualmie, it is gorgeously pretty.

With cats the idea is to look as big and threatening as possible. Pick up children and put them on your shoulders, it gets them off the ground and makes you look bigger. Pick up a stick, shout, look as tough as you can. Bear you do not make eye contact with and look the least threatening as possible. Unfortunately if you encounter a cat during daylight it is likely rabid. Even running in my semirural neighborhood I always carry....

That’s great!

A while back I read an anecdote about a small boat of poachers who went into a wildlife preserve (I think in Bangladesh) at night with no lights to avoid detection.

It was a small tributary, and as they slowly proceeded in the dark, they heard a soft splash. When they turned on a spotlight, they saw a tiger dragging a guy up the riverbank by his head.

Apparently, there were high banks on both sides of the stream, and the tiger had leaped over the boat, snatched one of the poachers out of the boat by his head in mid-air, and landed on the other side.

The tiger did not even so much as rock the little boat. Until they were out of there, they all stood back to back with guns at the ready.

After watching that video of the woman in China who got out of her car and was nailed by the tiger, I don’t doubt the veracity of that story I heard for a single second. It looked like it grabbed that woman by her lower back with its teeth on each side of her spine and made off with her with seemingly no effort at all.

“a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag.”

Or a Smith 629 mountain gun.

https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/31/products_id/26324

But you have to have very strong hands and wrists to be any good with it. 4in barrels have a lot of snap.

I prefer the Smith 586 4inch. It stops all except grizzlies.

With any luck and a good load, .357 would stop a Grizzly too.

I saw an article here of FR which listed Grizzlies and Brown Bears in Alaska which had been killed with handguns.

I was surprised by how many were 9mm. Not that I would recommend it. Still it would probably do OK against a Cougar.

Yes, you want to hold your ground with cats, make noise, and look as big as possible.

On one of my encounters with a cougar at night while hiking to my survey point, I took my backpack off and lifted it above my head and growled. I had my buck knife ready in case it attacked, but it didn't. It just slowly sauntered off. So I continued on my merry way.

How about an 1858 Remington .44 caliber revolver—or better yet, a Hoodah gun. Double barrelled action and full of shotgun in a pistol fun. Developed to fend off the tigers that climbed up the side of an elephant to attack the riders. Yikes!
