1 Dead, 1 Injured In Cougar Attack In Washington State

Two men were riding road bikes when the cougar attacked both of them.

One person was killed and a second person injured in a cougar attack near North Bend Saturday.

The attack happened in a very remote area northeast of Snoqualmie. According to the King County Sheriff's Office, two men were riding road bikes when the cougar attacked both of them.

A 31-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center for his injuries; he was alert and listed in serious condition.

The second man fled into the woods to escape the cougar, but the animal chased after him. Search crews found the second man dead from the attack. The King County Sheriff's Office says a recovery mission underway for for the man's body.

“If you must, walk slowly away, with your eyes on the animals but do not stare down the critter. This may make the animal interpret this as a challenge.”

This tactic works with 100-lb human cougars, too...

Dangerous critters. If you are in cougar country you shoukd be packing heat. However, they are stealth killers who attack from the rear with a bite to the base of the skull.
Pretty horrific.
Just said the cougar was starving to death and WA only 80 pounds.

Followup. Apparently, the bikers did what has been suggested, and it didn’t work.

Meanwhile, here in arid southeast Washington, at least two cougars (animal kind) have made their way to our community, probably navigating along the Yakima River. SPOKANE, Wash. (CBS/AP) — Washington state wildlife biologists have caught and tagged a 197-pound cougar. CBS affiliate KREM reports that the biologists tagged the massive cat on Monday north of Chewelah.
State carnivore research scientist Brian Kertson called the cat a “monster.” He said it’s so muscular that the first tranquilizer dart he shot at it popped out as the cat flexed......
