While we here at Today in Fort Smith recognize the passion and depth of individuals who recklessly own, breed and champion the pit bull breed, the harassment, anonymous attacks and yes, even death threats, we have endured in the past week does nothing to change the facts of the dangers said animals present to society.
This chapter started about two weeks ago when we detailed the attack of a child in Washington County by a pit bull that resulted in the mauling of the the toddler.
The bottom line? We posted a cautionary warning for people not to comment on the story with excuses and/or defense of the breed and we were immediately hit with a blitzkrieg of exactly that.
-"It's not the breed, it's the way they are raised."
-"We have had Fluffy for three years and he's just a big baby that wouldn't hurt a fly!"
-"I wonder what the little brat kid did to provoke that poor puppy?"
I ended up banning nine people but then I wrote a column laying out all the facts about the dangers of pit bulls--and the attacks continued.
But something else happened as well. We started getting encouraging messages from across the county congratulating us and championing our efforts.
One of the people who contacted us was a doctor with the Wisconsin Children's Hospital and she has linked us to others across the nation that specialize in and research dog bite statistics and fatalities across the country.
The good doctor pointed out a couple of things and since I tend to take my medical advice from those with degrees instead of meth labs. I concur.
Myth #1: It's the owner not the breed . . .

Twice I have been attacked by a pit bull that seemed friendly and gave no prior sign what so ever. The other day in Calvary Cemetery in Queens NY I look over my shoulder and a massive Pitt bull is approaching me slowly, nose low, no leash, it’s owner, a twenty something girl trailing well behind. The animal was within seven feet of me. I did not ask, rather I commanded the owner to get her dog away from me. What I ment to convey with my tone, rather than fear, was that I fully intended to lobotomize her dog. She got the message. I don’t give these hell hounds any slack at all, period.
No! it is Please don’t let me have a master who wants a monster on demand.

Please read my posts and replies.
Understand, please, that I do not hate pit bulls.
The dogs themselves suffer horribly because of what they have been bred for and the manner in which they are treated.
The problem of these dogs - a purpose-driven breed-type created by men - is that they have never been and are not now, suitable for pets. They have been and still are, bred for a purpose that is illegal in all 50 states: dogfighting. To the death.
I do understand the love that a human has for a dog. I have owned several and lived with many, many different breeds.
Thank you for inviting me to watch the “video on pit bulls as rescue animals” It illustrates your emotional age and your command of the English language.
(For everyone else who is tempted to watch the video referenced, the video is titled “STFU - Pink Man” I do not recommend it as helpful to the discussion.
Yes, puppies of all breeds are cute. Looks about 10 weeks.
Yes, this trait is an enormous part of the problem - maybe even the largest part.

“Myth #6: Pit bulls are not unpredictable
Despite pro-pit bull claims that pit bulls are not unpredictable, the breed frequently attacks without provocation or warning. It is well documented by humane groups that to excel in dogfighting, pit bulls were selectively bred to conceal warning signals prior to an attack.
For instance, a pit bull may not growl, bare its teeth or offer a direct stare before it strikes. Unlike all other dog breeds, pit bulls (fighting dogs) are also disrespectful of traditional signs of submission and appeasement.
According to expert Randall Lockwood, pit bulls are also liars. In a 2004 law enforcement training video, taped when Lockwood was vice president for research and educational outreach for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), he shares the following story:
“Fighting dogs lie all the time. I experienced it first hand when I was investigating three pit bulls that killed a little boy in Georgia. When I went up to do an initial evaluation of the dog’s behavior, the dog came up to the front of the fence, gave me a nice little tail wag and a “play bow” — a little solicitation, a little greeting. As I got closer, he lunged for my face.”
If a pit bull can fool an expert such as Lockwood, how can the average citizen anticipate a pit bull’s future action?
In a separate example, animal behavioral expert Peter Borchelt was sued after the pit bull he was training for a client “suddenly” attacked an ex-fireman.
After encountering Gabriel Febbraio on the street and assuring him that the pit bull was friendly, the dog broke free from Borchelt and attacked Febbraio in the groin. The jury awarded Febbraio $1 million dollars.”
Sounds like a true friend to me.
Well, the new neighbor PBO across the street has an ankle monitor. Their chain link fence is only 6ft, so I am keeping an eye on the situation.
I love my pit bull and she loves me.
Pit bull ping
It’s hopeless.
Personally, show me a person who doesn’t love dogs - ALL types of dogs - and I’ll show you a person I don’t think fit to live. There are humans in the planet I would take more joy out of slowly dispatching than the folks behind dogsbit.org and the people who support breed specific legislation. The worst pit bull ever is a better being and more worthy of life than any of the bully breed haters in my opinion.
I hope very much that you, your family and friends, your neighbors, and your dog survive to a ripe old age unscathed and untouched by tragedy or loss. Perhaps the warnings and knowledge of potential dangers pointed out here and other places will help to prevent injuries and/or deaths.
An encouraging sign is that there have been no new mauling deaths by pit bull in the USA since March 26. The normal statistical rate is one about every two weeks.
I pet peoples adorable pit bulls all the time. They are sweet dogs under most conditions. That said, if I got a dog, Id not get a pit bull.
Here is my scary pit bull story. When we lived in a beach town with an amazing police presence, I was in our alley watching my little boy on his scooter playing. All of a sudden a dog and a few uniformed officers ran into our alley. The officers yelled Little Boy! Drop your scooter and run to your house NOW! My boy with special needs did exactly what they said and ran to me and up the steps to safety. The dog bounded past with the officers behind him.
Later they came back to talk to us, and they wanted to meet my son. One of their cams had videoed the whole thing. I had thought they and their police dog were chasing a suspect. Nope. The DOG (happened to be a pit bull) was the suspect. He had mauled his owner, taken off, attacked an unknown woman on the street, and was running from the police when he ran up the alley where my son was playing. I hadnt known to be scared of the DOG.
The cops told my little boy he was a big hero back at the station because he had done exactly what they asked, didnt even try to bring his scooter home, just ran to safety, and they were all very proud of him. It was a cool thing. They showed us the video and my son felt very important.
Maybe some day She will love you to death.
A lot of them are beautiful, sleek dogs. A lot of them are cute, goofy, funny “clown” dogs most of the time.
show me a person who doesnt love dogs - ALL types of dogs - and Ill show you a person I dont think fit to live......
.....The worst pit bull ever is a better being and more worthy of life than any of the bully breed haters in my opinion.

Not sure what you mean; or if you mean what it looks like you mean. But I think you are expressing genuinely sociopathic traits and/or tendencies. And that is not a good thing.
Thank you.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I do not have a dog in this fight but would you please tell me what you think about the work done by the Pitbulls and Parolees outfit?
