(shameless vanity) Top 3 Songs ever recorded?
http://freerepublic.com | 04/01/2018 | heterosupremacist

I had an interesting conversation with friends, and was inspired to ask my Friends for their comments...

I first chose an American classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzPLQpLAxc4 ~ Nat King Cole ~ Stardust!

I then chose the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra ~ Irish Philharmonic Orchestra ~ Holy God We praise Thy Name(3:36)

Finally, I decided on a blues classic:

(1975 Dublin) Thin Lizzy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=261uidoVOVk

This could go any number of ways— but considering it is for all recordings in time.... to date- puts a “timeless” consideration in the mix. Things that are.. timeless, like tenets of love, our US history, and fundamentals. So:

1.) All The Things You Are (Jerome Kern/Hammerstein): Jo Stafford outstanding version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_yzmsiQqFA

2.Sailing to Philadelphia (M. Knopfler). A story of America, future West and the Philadelphia Wagon Road that began it- all from the work of Mason & Dixon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vu5SVPlW_8

3.) Gentle on My Mind (John Hartford)- Glen Campbell, thank you old friend, and thank you- John. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VecunpIqlg0

A three way tie for third:
1.) As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfield) here Dooley Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d22CiKMPpaY

2.) Skylark (Hoagy Carmichael): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7HsGBJjilQ

3.) Stardust (H. Carmichael/M. Parrish): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvhq3V8ZhTA

"Galveston" - Glen Campbell

I'd place Wichita Lineman ahead of Galveston.

White Christmas
Route 66 By Bobby Troup
Michelle by The Beatles

All three have been done countless times by all manner of people and rank as maybe three of the most recorded songs of all time.

"I'd place Wichita Lineman ahead of Galveston."

I think "Wichita Lineman" is a better song on it's own, but there are issues of the heart attached to "Galveston" which, for me, puts it ahead of "Wichita Lineman". Pretty damn close, though....

Before I go to Church, here is one of my three

The Who's performance of this song At The Concert for New York City right after 9/11 may be THE single greatest moment in the history of rock.

If you move beyond the American popular song to lieder, you get a different set of answers.

Schubert: ”An die Musik

Schubert: “Der Winterabend”

Schubert: “Auf dem Wasser zu singen”

Yes, indeed- Moon River. One of the last songs from Johnny Mercer (rescued by Henry Mancini, with this job- a song for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”). Johnny Mercer, Savannah native and great grandson of Revolutionary War hero Brigadier Gen. Hugh Mercer- was nearly destitute when this came to him in 1961 and thereafter wrote two more great songs- “Charade” for the Cary Grant/Hepburn 1963 movie and the incredible Sinatra hit—”Summer Wind” in 1965.

My post #62 errored in leaving off Johnny Mercer from his lyrics to Hoagy Carmichael’s classic- “Skylark”. Lyrics from the heart of the great Johnny Mercer- his longing for his lost love— Judy Garland.

Fun Fact: Glen Campbell (another Wrecking Crew alumnus) borrowed Carol Kaye’s 6-string bass for the solo on his masterpiece, “Wichita Lineman”.

...

I kind of suspect that she played it, too.

The solo filled in for a missing verse. Jimmy Webb was surprised that the song was recorded.

Glen Campbell was a virtuoso on guitar and why he was a part of the Wrecking Crew.

His idea to use & play a 6-string bass on “Wichita Lineman” was brilliant.

As an aside, Carol Kaye was in another studio room when Glen asked to borrow it for his solo. Glen played the solo, not CK.

A friend of mine is a highly acclaimed mastering engineer in LA and was a part of the weekly breakfast group that included Hal Blaine....the stories they could tell...

I’m glad to see the Moody Blues get some mentions, but a little surprised to see that song, though it is a good one.
Here’s some trivia:

The lead vocals are provided by the song’s writer, Justin Hayward. John Lodge shouts the line “England!” twice in the song. Also, towards the end of the song, Ray Thomas provides the line “More tea vicar?”, a phrase used by the English to acknowledge someone has flatulated. Live performances of the song often receive laughter from the audience after Thomas’s line, who then makes a gesture of drinking tea with his hand.
