An American in Paris, by George Gershwin, as performed by Oscar Levant (piano)...Oscar Levant was probably the best known interpreter/performer of Gershwin's "classical" music, but unless I missed something somewhere, "An American in Paris" was an orchestral piece with no real opportunity for Oscar's solo virtuosity - he did however have a solo stint in the movie "An American in Paris", when he played a portion of Gershwin's "Concerto in F", along with himself as conductor, violin section and audience through some imaginative movie gimmicks - just sayin'.....

Yes, thanks, copy and paste error on my part; should have deleted Oscar.

Highway Star is one of the three greatest opening numbers. The other two are Rock and Roll from Zeppelin and Tie Your Mother Down by Queen. I don’t know if it is an opening song, but it should be. JJF by the Stone is another one.

I couldn’t pick three favorites but I’ll post three that I listen to often to “get my blood pumping”.

Born to be Wild; Steppenwolf

Frankenstein; Edgar Winter Group

Space Truckin’; Deep Purple

Warren Zevon has always been a fav of mine - especially as a songwriter.

I’ve always liked the SoCal Country Rock, perhaps because I was living in Hollywood in early 70s. Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Poco, Eagles, etc. Jackson Browne “helped” discover Warren Zevon and get him a record contract.

On “Excitable Boy”, Linda Ronstadt & Jennifer Warnes sing the background vocals - LR’s voice really stands out on that track.

Perhaps my fav WZ song was “Keep Me in Your Heart” from his final album - and it was his way of saying farewell to someone he loved. It really touches me as I lost my wife, literally “the-girl-next-door”, to breast cancer when she was 28 and I suddenly became Mr Mom to our daughters, 4 and 1. She fell into a coma for her final 5 days and we never had a chance to say our good-byes.

Anyway, sorry to become a bit maudlin this early Monday morning...

I can’t believe nobody else mentioned Elvis!

(I was also digging Billie Holiday)

"That's not even the greatest Rolling Stones song ever recorded. This is."

Absolutely agree. The haunting intro to Gimme Shelter is sure brilliance, not to mention the dueling melodic leads in the bridge. It is a 3 chord song with the most basic drums.

My second favorite is Sympathy For The Devil. Most Stones fans don't realize it had no drums. The percussion was bongos, maracas, and that elongated tubular instrument played with a stick along the ridges which gave it sorta high-hat sound. Got name?

When Mick Taylor joined them after Brian Jones OD, it was a perfect match with Keith Richard's playing and his and Jagger's writing. Between them and the under-rated Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, they created toe-tapping rock standards that even millenials listen to.

Obviously I'm in the Stones camp vs Beatles. I didn't like early Beatles because they were bubblegum pop, although played blues in their Cavern days. The Stones came right out the box with old blues covers and rocking originals.

Yes, the Beatles matured into technically advanced song writers and fair musicians, but who has their music in the background of so many movies? And who has the most songs on any jukebox? Bottom line for me, the Stones had and still have soul - the Beatles, never.

Oh my gosh, so sorry you had to suffer such a tragedy.

California had an incredibly vibrant music scene 60s through 80s. So many memorable artists and albums.

Thanks Jenny for the kind words - sincerely appreciated.

At times it still seems like a neverending nightmare and only my faith in Christ gives me the strength to persevere.
