freerepublic | 3/9/2018 | greeenyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks for the tip!

I was going to buy a toaster oven from the thrift store but wouldn't you know it as soon as this happened they were all gone.

I finally remembered the NuWave that I haven't used in a couple of years. I'll roast a chicken in there for Sunday dinner. I've got a hankering for biscuits. Maybe I can do some of those in it. I cooked a little frozen pizza in it for my daughter and some canned corned beef hash.

If you have sunshine, you can make a solar cooker out of a pizza box (any box with a lid - including a styro cooler)with some saran wrap and tape. Just do a web search there are several videos on how to.

I had to experiment a bit - there’s also instructions for the stove top oven out there somewhere.

I would be interested in the pics. We are reading and planning for an expansion if we need to. The greenhouse we have is fine for season extension, but something with geothermal or a wood stove back porch type grow room might be needed at some point.

I can see why you might not like those.

Ha!

I tried to make a solar oven a few years ago and it was an epic fail!

It was a middle school science project for my daughter.

The person in the tutorial used styrofoam display boards covered with heavy foil and cut into four tulip petal shapes which were lashed together with shoelaces.

It was about 80 degrees outside. We set the thing up as recommended.

Several hours later we had a mini bundt pan with warm chocolate goo and some kind of yellow goo that was supposed to be an egg.

There was also-from a different tutorial-a shoebox lined with black paper and it had a glass cover from a picture frame. That was a dud too.

If I had a better tutorial or a real solar oven maaaaybe it might work. though.

There was a lady from Florida University Extension gave a good video using Styrofoam container - just a box no tulips. LOL

Drought - that’s why we bought a swimming pool from Walmart on sale. The drought of 2012 - we had wonderful garden growing lots of wild blackberries.

Had to watch it all burn up because the rain barrels rain out mid May instead of end of Aug. Now we catch water from the roof in the swimming pool - 4000 gallons.

What an interesting idea :)

Well, I’d really like to have a cistern, like my grandparents had on their farm. But that’s expensive and you have to dig up the yard for the concrete container.

So I thought well, why not above ground pool for a couple of hundred bucks. We have used it for 3 years.

I’ll have to try again in July and August.

Your stovetop deal sounds like it might work pretty good.

I’ll have to try that.

The Greenhouse arrived on Thursday, but will stay in its box until the ground thaws and we can get the pad built for it. I’ll be starting veggie plants in my grow-rack, but not until end of March or so; weather depending. I plan on buying some of what I need this year, as from this Fall forward, I will be growing out just about anything and everything I can in my Greenhouse. (Yippee!)

We got one more dump of snow last week; 6-inches. Man, it was heavy - like shoveling ice cream - but certainly not as rewarding, LOL! Thee days later - it’s all gone again. Why shovel? Meh!

Lots of Robins out and about now and the Goldfinches are turning slightly more yellow, which is a good sign! ;)

I have been stashing cardboard to line four more garden beds that we’ll start on as soon as the weather turns warmer. We have another week and the Weatherman PROMISES weather in the 50’s on a consistent basis. We shall see.

We are driving to Sturgeon Bay on Monday to drop off Beau’s black bear hide for tanning - he’s having it made into a rug, and lately has announced that the bull elk skull and rack he’s been boiling and the bear skull he’s having cleaned by beetles (!) at a friends will be future ‘decor’ in the family room. Alrighty, then...

I AM looking forward to the drive, though - a BEAUTIFUL part of our state, to say the least:

I know that doesn’t have a thing to do with gardening - just venting! :)

Have a Great Weekend, Everyone!

“A hot dry summer may mean a good tomato crop...”

Plant plenty of peppers, too. They LOVE a season like that. :)

“We haven’t had much snow this winter, so we probably won’t get much rain this summer.”

That’s what I’m thinking, too. Last year I had to water the garden ONCE - it rained enough each week all season long.

This year? I’ll have the garden hose in my hand more often than not.

However - we should have a great Pepper season, so I’m looking forward to that! :)
