If We Receive a Message From Aliens, Should We Delete it Without Reading it?
Univerese Today ^ | Feb 12, 2018 | Matt WIlliams

Roughly half a century ago, Cornell astronomer Frank Drake conducted Project Ozma, the first systematic SETI survey at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia. Since that time, scientists have conducted multiple surveys in the hopes of find indications of “technosignatures” – i.e. evidence of technologically-advanced life (such as radio communications).

...But according to a new study, such a message could also pose a serious risk to humanity. Drawing on multiple possibilities that have been explored in detail, they consider how humanity could shield itself from malicious spam and viruses.

The study, titled “Interstellar communication. IX. Message decontamination is impossible“, recently appeared online. The study was conducted by Michael Hippke, a independent scientist from the Sonneberg Observatory in Germany; and John G. Learned, a professor with the High Energy Physics Group at the University of Hawaii. Together, they examine some of the foregone conclusions about SETI and what is more likely to be the case.

To be fair, the notion that an extra-terrestrial civilization could pose a threat to humanity is not just a well-worn science fiction trope. For decades, scientists have treated it as a distinct possibility and considered whether or not the risks outweigh the possible benefits. As a result, some theorists have suggested that humans should not engage in SETI at all, or that we should take measures to hide our planet.

I do understand the solicitation of public work. After the acceptance of my proposal we will ask if the scope of the engagement is actually sufficient. A committee will be convened to evaluate the scope of work.

There are changes that might have to be made, just sayin.

While there is the slight possibility of an “if you can read this you’re a threat, now we’re going to destroy, sorry” message it’s not actually likely. Anybody trying to decide if we’re a threat can probably figure it out with a couple of observation missions. By the time somebody makes contact they’ll have already made the slaves/ destroy/ allies decision, and if they’re not leading with explosions and stuff they probably like us. Might as well open the mail.

There is no way to hide the fact that there is intelligent life on Earth (except in the office of the PM of Canada).

If they want to send a message they will, but it seems ridiculous to think they would indiscriminately send out destructive messages with no hope of ever finding out if they have destroyed us.

The time delay makes the idea of having a conversation ridiculous.

The search is only to satisfy our curiosity, and for some, to “disprove” the Judeo-Christian world view.

Detecting a coherent message, containing information, isn’t going to prove there’s no God, as some fondly hope for.

I will do it for $100,000.

At this rate we'll be down to bus fare and a cup of coffee. Let's split the 100K, and let's keep our mouths shut. OK?

The power required to transmit a signal interstellar distances is cosmic in scale.

Assorted stray radio transmissions from earth quickly dissipate to nothing.

Weak signals received by the Aricebo radio telescope are generated by assorted cosmic eruptions of mindboggling energy. Not a chance any of the signals received by Aricebo were generated by stray alien television transmissions.

We have, in fact, received ET signals. This is from a document I found on the NSA web site:

Key To The Extraterrestrial Messages

Dr. Campaign presented a series of 29 messages from outer space in "Extraterrestrial Intelligence." NSA Technical Journal. Vol. XI, No. 2, pp 101 ff and in the Special Mathematics and Engineering Issue of the Journal, pp 117 ff. The following article develops a key to these messages. Paragraph numbers parallel the serial numbers of the messages reprinted in the appendix below. This includes two new series --30 and 31-- not included in the previous article.

The article concludes that the only decipherable message is a Periodic Table of the Elements containing an additional constant for each element.

I think if we just click no on the Read Receipt we’ll be ok. Except somebody’s well-meaning grandma somewhere will click yes and doom us all.

Earth is the planet spamming the galaxy and humans aren’t doing it to advance alien lifeforms. Their agenda to to exploit:

See? Humans are not alone!
Think of what we can do with their technology!
I for one welcome our new ant overlords!
Etc

historians would also proclaim that everything from fire, the wheel, pyramids, the arch, computers, et al were gifts by more advanced aliens.

why would we get a "message" rather than what ever their first radio transmissions of what ever was common there at the time?

One of the ‘great’ running gags from the old ‘Third Rock from the Sun’ was the ‘middle’ alien was always admonishing earthlings about how stupid we were and how far advanced they were.
Everything bought up and the alien would say ‘got that’..

Except he bemoaned the fact that WE had mastered Shampoo and Conditioner in the same bottle and they just couldn’t get the hang of it...

Guess they really would be ‘stumped’ today as WE have Conditioner, Shampoo & body wash in same bottle...

Greatest invention ever..
The THERMOS
IT keep HOT HOT
IT keep COLD COLD

HOW DO IT KNOW?????

As Seinfeld observed

What with the new ‘laws’ of pickup up dog doo while walking them, when the aliens land just who do you think they will think is in charge?
The dog who is crapping or the dude/dudette picking it up?

(close..no real quote there)

I won't open a message from aliens if those messages have any of the following subject lines:

1. Sexy Mars women want to meet you!

2. Would you like a rock-hard projectile?

3. Greetings. I am looking for an honest person to handle a large transaction. I am Price Gallobie from Alpha Centari with a special proposition....
