Is the Yellowstone supervolcano close to erupting? Scientists detect more than 200 earthquakes

Latest swarm began Feb 8, about 8mi northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana As of February 18, the scientists say they've detected more than 200 quakes Still, experts say the activity is 'relatively weak,' and alert level remains normal

A new swarm of earthquakes has cropped up at the Yellowstone supervolcano, with more than 200 small temblors detected in the last 10 days alone.

According to experts with the US Geological Survey, the latest swarm began on February 8 in a region roughly eight miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana – and, it’s increased dramatically in the days since.

But for now, scientists say there’s no reason to worry.

While the earthquakes are likely caused by a combination of processes beneath the surface, the current activity is said to be ‘relatively weak,’ and the alert level at the supervolcano remains at ‘normal.’

According to the USGS, the new swarm is occurring in about the same location as the Maple Creek swarm last summer, which brought roughly 2,400 earthquakes in a four-month span.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations picked up the first quakes just over a week ago, counting more than 200 as of February 18.

But, the experts say there are likely many more that have gone undetected.

‘The present swarm started on February 8, with a few events occurring per day,’ according to USGS.

‘On February 15, seismicity rates and magnitudes increased markedly. As of the night of February 18, the largest earthquake in the swarm is M2.9, and none of the events have been felt. All are occurring about 8 km (5 mi) beneath the surface.’

We always have earthquakes around here. It’s normal and it’s nothing to get too excited about.

When it finally blows, a lot of people will be ready to say, “Told ya so!”

Except, they’ll all be dead.

why don’t the warmers worry about this potential catastrophe instead of worrying about the temp rising a tenth of a degree in a hundred years..

Very simple answer... NO!

I’m not a scientist, or even interested in any way, shape or form about volcano’s. But I have read that this ‘super volcano’ only goes off every million years or so... So what are the chances this will happen anytime soon?

Slim to slimmer than none.

The end of the world is nigh...

That refrain has been on the lips of literally billions of humans over the past million years or so. And of course, the end is truly nigh for all of us. Nobody has lived forever, but for some reason many people are under this suspicion that they will be here when the final nigh has come. They won’t be.

Tell me a comet is heading towards us and then you can yell it to the top of your lungs. Until then, the human race is hanging in there and will be for some time to come. Small volcano’s, big ones, tidal waves... What the heck... Even nuclear war. Humans are the cockroaches of the animal kingdom and come hell or high water we will find a way to survive.

Been years since I was there, but from looking at the map it seemed the eruptions were becoming less frequent and severe.

Wishful thinking on my part? Vulcanism is complex, pressure below, weakness in the earth's crust, viscosity and temperature all come to bear. All of Yellowstone's eruptions were massive, but some were more so than others. The last one or two were less destructive, IIRC
