The Radio Reporter Who Lost His Voice But Still Covers Congress

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen had a plane to catch. The House of Representatives had already called last votes on Thursday afternoon, and the Republican Congresswoman from Miami was hustling to get home when an attendant in the Speaker’s Lobby stopped her. Jamie Dupree had asked for an interview. For him, Ros-Lehtinen could wait. “Jamie Dupree!” she called into the crowded hall. “Jamie Dupree!”

Dupree, a 54-year-old radio reporter for the Cox Media Group, materialized out of the crowd of reporters and politicians and the two found a quiet corner of the bustling room underneath a glass chandelier. Dupree extended his microphone and pointed at his notebook, where he had written in large red capital letters: “TAX REFORM?” She gave no hint that she was confused by such a blunt question. “It’s not a perfect bill,” Ros-Lehtinen answered, but she would vote “yes.” Dupree pointed to his next question. “CR?”—referring to the Continuing Resolution to fund the government—was scrawled in the same red marker. Ros-Lehtinen explained that she was a “no” on the bill because of her commitment to Dreamers.

As she turned to go, Dupree attempted a thank you. But his tongue swelled and his throat closed. A bit of spittle escaped his mouth; he choked on his words. Ros-Lehtinen touched his shoulder as she walked away.

The local station that carries Hannity and Rush is a Cox station and has had Jamie Dupree as its "man in Washington" for many years. This is a good human interest story on how a man has adapted to the challenges presented by his body to continue to do what he loves in reporting on politics. He plays it straight as anybody who has listened to Hannity can attest.

Wow, sorry to hear this, used to listen to him when he would call into Sean Hannity and Neil Boortz. Glad he has been able to adapt. Thanks for posting this.

We had a similar story here in Pennsylvania where Sandy Starobin, who covered state government in Harrisburg for a number of radio stations, went blind late in life but continued to work.

Dupree is a Democrat and he used every chance he could get to take veiled swipes at conservatives on Hannitys show by Sean is too much of a lightweight to pick up on it.

"Dupree is a Democrat and he used every chance he could get to take veiled swipes at conservatives on Hannitys show..."

Interesting, I felt the same way while listening to him on Hannity. I always wondered why Sean seemed to hold him in such high regard.

Dupree should consult with Steven Hawking about computer-mediated speech.

Perhaps his voice problem is due to his subconscious mind's inability to continue propagating Democrat lies.

Tongue Protrusion Dystonia.

An extremely rare disease/condition with no real known cause and no real known cure or treatment.

Too bad.
