"I can assure you this is not a house cat," Sluder said in a Facebook post. "It looks to be the same size as a medium to large dog."
Wildlife officials have said that big cats like panthers or cougars have been extinct in Mississippi for 100 years due to habitat changes and hunting, but people claim to have spotted the animals over the past 30 years . "Most biologists credit these sightings to misidentification, released exotic pets or (rarely) animals passing through from places like Texas where lions still live," the Mississippi State University Extension Service says.
No word what species this giant feline might be.

You are right and the same blind eye is turned toward grizzly bears in Colorado. There are rare sightings, but they are denied by Parks and Wildlife.
I hung out in a place that was infested with black and yellow panthers - I even had one, neighbor killed it while I was out - and locals told me panther litters are like labs, some kits yellow, blondish and black.
Change jungles to swamps, and you are getting close.
Mountain lions - west
Panthers - south
Puma - Hispanic
Cougar may be yankee
Big enough and dark enough, but it can’t be a Carolina Panther - it isn’t on one knee.
Jaguars. Sometimes black. Probably some in Texas, yet.
Dammit, one of my cats got out again. At least it isn’t a school day. (Bus stops are prime) Gonna have to tap the bowls and have it come running home.
“You all know me.
You know that I can take care of this problem for you.
I’ll need a can of tuna, a ball of yarn and an anti-tank gun.”
Well, there has to be a reason there isn’t much in the way of a fossil record for cats. They must be recent arrivals.
Nebraska did the same thing.
We knew they were around. Dad lost a few hogs to one, and the dog refused to leave the barn.
They kept it up till a puma got hit on I80 in Omaha.
Never mind that the more.. rural.. areas had been quietly taking care of the issue for a while.
Moral of the story, all government agents are full of it.
In WV, western VA, NC, SC, Ga & Pa cougars\mountain lions are officially extinct though I can find any number of hunters who claim to have seen or heard one. If these state game departments acknowledged their existence then they would be forced to make an assay of their numbers. A very expensive time consuming thankless budget killing proposition.
I don’t know what that was. But I’m pretty sure it was caused by global warming.
Ogden Nash?
“Those Savannahs are gorgeous.”
They are, um, purrrty.
We have owned one, a F1 (half African serval, and half ocecat - a domestic breed), and I don’t recommend the F1s at least as a pet except perhaps for a very specific type of owner. They have a “wildish” personality, but more importantly they’re extremely athletic. They can jump 10 feet in the air from a sitting start, which is impressive for an almost 30 lb. cat.
No part of our home was safe, the cat destroyed quite a few pieces of crystal, vases, statues, plants and other decorations. It also loved the idea of freedom, and was quite sneaky about lurking and then dashing for the door when open. Once out, it was always a major task to recapture the cat.
Other than that, they’re great! ;-)
BTW, in response to other posts here, the cat in the video is definitely not a Savannah - aside from being far too big, the ears are way too small.
I have been privileged to meet a few Southern Cougars. ;-)
Most have a bodacious set of Tatas.
They’re in western MD now and have been, for years.
The DNR denies this vehemently but they put up posters warning of dire consequences of interfering with them, in any way, shape or form and there’s a 24/7 hotline to call if you see any of the mountain lions WE ABSOLUTELY DO NOT HAVE.
:D
Yes, that tail!
There’s a reason people hunted them down, back in the day.
Same with wolves, coyotes and bears.
Suckers will kill you or your animals, if they get half a chance.
Fricking *bears* have been spotted piddling around right in front of my house.
Back in the 70s, a Bobcat slaughtered my gramma’s chickens and later attacked my great-uncle as he was walking in the yard one night.
The sound of them screaming in the woods was horrifying.
S/S/S.
” Despite sightings the cougars were extinct here right up until a DNR agent was attacked.”
I LMAO over that.
The irony...so delicious.
