Monday, September 18, is National Cheeseburger Day.
Pepsi, no Coke.
If I was forced to make a choice, the cheeseburger would be my favorite food.
I am trying to stay away from carbs, so the other day I took a heavy leaf of romaine, topped it with shredded cheddar cheese (bacon infused), salt and pepper and sliced baby bella mushrooms. Cooked my burgers in the pan, added them to the leaf, added sliced cheese and topped it with another leaf. Nuked it for twenty seconds to complete the “gluing” process.
Didn’t look all that attractive, and ate it with a knife and fork, but man it was gooooood!
Same day as Air Force Birthday? Coincidence? I think not?

Americas favorite sandwich is honored on September 18th with a slice of cheese. Its National Cheeseburger day!
There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s.
One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his fathers Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.
There are other claims of the invention of the cheeseburger:
A cheeseburger appeared on a 1928 menu at ODells, a Los Angeles restaurant, which listed a cheeseburger, smothered with chili, for 25 cents.
Kaelins Restaurant Louisville, Kentucky says it invented the cheeseburger in 1934.
Denver, Colorado 1935 A trademark for the name cheeseburger was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In.
According to its archives, Gus Belt, founder of Steak n Shake, applied for a trademark on the word cheeseburger in the 1930s.
Vegans are deeply saddened.
I remember my first restaurant cheeseburger ever.
We were going from Ohio to N. Carolina along old 25 through Kentucky. I75 was not yet being built so far as I know. For whatevrer reason, my parents stopped at a restaurant in Corbin, Ky. That might be the first restaurant I remember eating at.
(Wilsons? was maybe the name...I was young, maybe 6 or 7.)
Even now that cheeseburger stands out. The cheese was such a great flavor. Never had another one that has replaced that memory as the best I’ve ever tasted.
Shasta.
Odd but true: I had a cheeseburger for breakfast before finding out just now about CB day.
In the fifties there would be hamburger wars. All the little hamburger stands, restaurants, coffee shops that made burgers would get into price wars. Burgers could go as low as eight for a dollar. It wasn’t difficult to find regular priced burgers at certain shops six for a dollar.
Those burgers consisted of buns, small piece of cooked ground beef, two pickles, a squirt of mustard, and a squirt of catsup. They were always cooked on the griddle, and tasted so good six weren’t enough for this growing boy.
Did you use Ball Park Burger Buns?
GOOD!
No, I used to buy Kaiser rolls at the supermarket, sometimes potato rolls.
National Cheeseburger Day coincides with the birthdays of two notable notabilities.
1) The United States Air Force (Happy 59th B-Day!)
2) ME, happy 64th B-Day!
Now somebody go gets me a cheeseburger!!!!
Low Carb Big Mac Salad:
Rehydrate 1 T dehydrated onion bits in a spoonful of hot water.
Nuke some brown ground beef in a bowl and one slice of American cheese. While still hot, add the rehydrated onion, shredded lettuce, chopped dill pickle (or pickle relish) and LC thousand island dressing.
LC Thousand Island Dressing:
1 1/4 C mayo
2 T ketchup
2 T dill pickle relish
dash worchestershire
1 T vinegar
4 t Splenda
Tastes just like a Big Mac and an easy take to work lunch.
Sonic is having a $2.99 cheeseburger and onion rings special. Too bad their onion rings are horrid.
Printed! Can’t wait to try it.
I’m officially inspired. Will fire up the grill this evening, pull some burger out of the freezer, some tomatoes out of the garden.
