WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD JUNE 30, 2017
freerepublic | June 30, 2017 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/30/2017 7:23:22 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. Really nice day today. Had a little rain this AM, but dry enough to work the garden this afternoon and plenty of afternoon sun. Nights are finally in the 60s.

Got some herbs transplanted into some of the concrete blocks that I used to replace some rotten wood and expand the raised bed by the basement patio.

The taters planted earlier have finally bloomed and the garlic is about ready to pull. Everything has taken about a month longer than usual-I think it's the cool weather.

Hubby planted some sort of purple speckled beans and we got the first crop in and cooked up a mess of them to eat. They turned green and looked similar to the Italian green beans after cooking.

Still no tomatoes. Have been looking at the catalog to see what I might grow this fall that would be different. Have some ancient wheat that I'm thinking about trying out.

Hope you are all having a great holiday weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

Some progress on your Missouri plot. I have a few ‘maters but some of the blooms are falling off. We had a rainy June here in N. Tx but the summer scorch is just up ahead. Them maters will hibernate until Sept then.

Shade cloth might help. We had an unusual hot, dry and scorching summer a few years back. I had to water a little more often, and took an old sheet to set up a makeshift shade. It worked pretty good.

I was in field plowing today, but not in the garden.

Garden got very short changed this season. Too many conflicts. Did put out some more trees at the farm getting ready for when we finish the remodel and move there from town.

Just now getting back to last week’s thread. I’ll do a private reply to avoid confusion with this week’s thread.

We are getting slower every year. That’s why we are replacing a lot of areas with fruit trees and berry bushes.

Well, update on our Aerogarden experiment (I know - it’s not really *Gardening* ;-)

Everything sprouted within the first week, except the parsley, which apparently takes longer. (I’m concerned about the Dill, which looks very leggy and thin, and I’m not sure that it’s something that will do well under LED lights; but everything else is looking good.)

We got this system mainly for mint, because we use a lot of that; but Basil seems to come on strongly in it, and we use a lot of that, too.

I want to try Oregano in it.

My pepper plants are strong - but no peppers yet. Must have 100-150 up. Put another 100 or so into the small garden.

Bush Early Girl has produced about 21-23 tomatoes - some small. There are about 7-10 more going. Some just getting started.

That Ferry-Morse Prolific Straightneck Squash produces strong, strong plants. Some other seeds didn’t take off at all but I have at least 9 more coming up.

Gonna take one more shot with carrots - got just enough time. One different version hope to plant tomorrow. They grew so good last year but don’t remember what I had.

Got radishes looking strong, another looking so-so (lousy clay-filled soil). And a few random tomato plants are starting to grow good.

Marconi peppers doing good and about time to harvest some more basil. The little critters been chewing on a lot of leaves. Harvested about 3 weeks ago so it’s doing a good comeback.

Other Sweet Snacking Pepper and some other kind of pepper (forgot) those are getting stronger. Nothing on them yet. They’re sharing a planter box with more green/orange/yellow/red peppers.

It’s a little crowded out there in some spots. That heavy rain sure dumped a load yesterday.

Try adding a little handful of epsom salt to the peppers and water in. The magnesium seems to help the production.

I have much coming up this year. I successfully kept plants indoors until after the last frost. I have several types of heirloom tomatoes, eggplants, yellow squash, mustard greens, collard greens, turnips, rutabagas and lots of beans (early contender, etna, navy, pinto and pole beans all around the perimeter so they can climb the fences).

Yes I have added both too.

And I have more area to garden, just didn’t this year.

I do need to move a bunch of blackberry bushes to the farm. They do much better at our place in town, where it is somewhat sandy soil.

I just don’t give enough attention to the stuff at the farm. Will have to add a fence. Lots of rabbits and raccoons there. And more rattle snakes than I care to have. I do have the help of a badger, he is really good at ending snakes.

My corn is chest high and starting to tassel. My broccoli has not started to head, but my cauliflower has just started. I have squashes of several types and all have got flowers. My peppers are starting to grow pods and I will be glad to have some really hot peppers; including ghost peppers. I live near Seattle.

Thanks I’ll check that out. They are totally too close to one another. With the exception of the California Wonders, all seeds came from store-bought (non-organic).

They really grow well if you put them in starters or soil very soon after removing from the pepper.

I must have 1,000 extra seeds. Tried mailing about 300-500 - oops, fail. But I must still have 700-1,000 extra seeds for next go-round. Plus a couple-three more packages of California Wonders and some Carnival Blend(?) multiple-colors. Trying an organic package now but not many have come up. Maybe 4-6 young plants. I should be able to grow into early November if things remain like the last few years. Certainly late October.

I’ve got bone meal and MiracleGro (veggie) down. I’ll see if I can come up with epsom salts. Thanks for the tip.

If it grows, it’s gardening. LOL. I have a lot of trouble with dill indoors or out. Basil and Mint are very good herbs to have a bit of fresh around.

Tried a package of 20 cent seeds from Wal*Mart on Dill. Fail.

Probably my error.

The radishes go great, though. Yeah, I got extra across the spectrum. Prepper mindset .... can’t let go.

I still feel bad about starting radishes indoors, they go great and boom fail outside.

The latest were all started outside and are doing well.

But now I’ve lost 2 rounds of Bush Early Girl tomatoes, 2 rounds of carrot and a round of radishes.

They all started really well indoors - couldn’t survive outdoors. Gotta be smoother in the transition. Oops.

I’m going to plant some fooled you Jalepeno peppers - have some old seed that may or may not sprout.
