A massive Idaho tree that grew over more than a century from a seedling sent by a noted naturalist has been uprooted and is poised to travel about two blocks Sunday to a new location.
SNIP
St. Luke's Health System in Boise is paying $300,000 to relocate the tree to make room for an expansion.

The sequoia was sent to Boise as a seedling by naturalist John Muir, who played a key role in establishing California's Sequoia National Park.

You can do almost anything with enough money.
Even go to the moon. NASA proved that!
They could make a whole new forest for that!
Yes you can, easier to spend then money moving it then to fight all the wack jobs that would come out of the wood work if you tired to cut it.
And then some in a lot of place in the country.
The religious icon of John Muir.
They’re moving the tree in worship of that dude.
This is idiotic. Cut the damn thing down and make benches for the hospital.
Just build around it.
I wish I had the money to move our cherry tree.

Too bad.
I wondered how it worked?
There is no taproot. They only root to 12 to 14 feet deep even at maturity. A mature sequoia’s roots can occupy over 1 acre of earth and contain over 90,000 cubic feet of soil. That mass of matted roots and soil has to maintain the equilibrium of a tree that is nearly 300 feet tall and weighs nearly 2 million pounds.
This one is a “baby” as sequoias go (100 years old)...looks like they are digging out about 25 foot diameter circle...hope it is enough.

You’re probably right. As large as it it, the root “ball” they’re taking with the tree is likely not enough to allow a sequoia to survive.
Doing well? It looks half dead already before the move.
That picture was taken weeks ago. Drove past it yesterday and half the needles are now brown.
I agree. To hot, and needs more water than it can absorb with the disturbed root. Should have done this in a winter month.

“and everything is in place for the 800,000-pound (362,877-kilogram) landmark to start moving on inflatable rollers shortly after midnight.”
I think they will be using ‘air skates’, not rollers?
Hope there will be photos?
Skates can take massive loads but require a smooth surface.
Also curious about the weight.
25ft square, 5 ft high ~ 3100 cu ft * 50 (lb cu ft)
~150,000 pounds plus the tree?
The aboveground tree weighs over 500k?
Seems dumb to do it in the summer. Probably killed it. What a terrible shame.
it doesn't sound like they brought enough of the root system for it to live.
As someone upthread said, why not build around it?
