Box office flatlines as everyone ignores the multiplex this Memorial Day weekend
Business Insider ^ | May 28, 2017 | Jason Guerrasio

Memorial Day weekend would seem like the best time for a big summer blockbuster to hit the theaters, but in recent years audiences have been focusing more on their tans and grillmaster skills over the holiday than going to a movie theater.

Past Memorial Day holiday weekend openings that were instant fails at the box office include: "Tomorrowland" ($33 million opening weekend), "Alice Through the Looking Glass" ($26.8 million), and "X-Men: Apocalypse" ($65.7 million). Now you can add two new releases from this year to that list.

We saw Alien Covenant. It was better than Prometheus but not as good as Alien.

My daughter and I were trying to find a chick flick to go see, and there was nothing interesting.

if you go to the movies on a regular basis you will notice something missing (young people) most the movie goers I see at the matinee are over 40 in age or young mothers with even younger kids. Hollywood does not understand that the 14 to 30 year old age group only shows up for movie spectacles. if they want to return movie goers to the theaters they are going to have to rethink the formula that brings in the young or look at the age group that is going and start making movies they want to see. I would love to see some historical movies. re examine the movies from the eighties and nineties and ask what made them successful but please Hollywood don’t remake the movie.

Having watched Alien Covenant twice now, I totally disagree with your conclusion.

I came across the enclosed reviews of Alien Covenant and thought the authors did an excellent job of presenting the themes Ridley Scott sets out to accomplish in this movie and in Prometheus:

http://www.comingsoon.net/horror/reviews/850735-the-majesty-and-horror-of-alien-covenant#/slide/1

https://thepopcornjunkie.com/2017/05/21/the-gods-and-monsters-of-alien-covenant/

Combining the the themes and story arc begun in Prometheus, followed by Alien Covenant which takes place 10 years later and 17 years before the events in Alien, these "prequels" combined dovetail nicely with the Alien and Aliens universe and "fill in a lot of blanks" = questions unanswered before now in the earlier films.

I second that!

NOLA, is getting rid of Civil War monuments. Erase history, only if you want to repeat it. : (

It’s because the movies out this weekend stunk:
(Rotten Tomatoes ratings)
- Baywatch: 19%
- Pirates of the Caribbean: 32%
- War Machine: 52%

The rest were either art house junk or had no significant set of critiques.

If you want to ogle women you can do so for free on the internet, or so I'm told. And you don't have all the oatmeal in between.

Most actors, especially today, are moonbats. She filled out the Wonder Woman role quite well with same campiness of the original comic books.

Oh my god, Alien Resurrection was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Just horrid and dark and ugly. I wanted the 2 hours of my life back after that bomb.

Why do they always remake classics and top rated movies?

Why don’t they reboot the failures and get it right with the remake?

Time-Life-Warner-Turner-DC and ABC-Disney-Marvel get rich off of merchandising whenever the trend is superhero blockbusters.

Their news divisions pimp their own product and never disclose to audiences their financial interest in promoting such product.

"Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made. Spaceballs-the T-shirt, Spaceballs-the Coloring Book, Spaceballs-the Lunch box, Spaceballs-the Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs-the Flame Thrower."

Following Manchester and other similar mass murder venues, most folks that I know will not go to any large-crowd, soft-target events any more...from a stadium to a local theater complex......even if it were to be a Trump rally where he promises to sing "My Way" and do a soft-shoe at the podium.

This is really going to hurt the pocketbooks of the leftist, liberal, snowflake, mouthy and stupidly-arrogant pop "stars" when they start seeing the numbers in their concert crowds start going down, down, down.

Hah.....for them, what goes around comes around. Good !!!

P.S....I haven't been inside a movie house for twenty years. I just don't like the movies made any more.....and I don't know of any "movie stars" that would turn me on in any way. I don't even know most of the current crop of names except if I see 'em listed on a movie ad on TV. Even with the names I don't know what they look like.

Yet, I love movies, grew up with them...and still love to watch the oldy-goldie and the tried-and true on movie classic TV.
