VANITY: I need academic advice

I had a professor this semester who is a community organizer from Chicago (I kid you not). He was utterly worthless, I am one of a number of students who reported him for being worthless, and he hates me (because he always did and) because the administration has evidently cracked down on him.

He holds a chokehold over EVERY student in my discipline, since every student will have to take this ONE professor for one worthless (waste of money), but required course.

What do I do? This is so wrong. So very very heinously wrong. He is so worthless, and so transparently partisan, yet he gets to pick winners and losers, and I am going into debt for this degree!

This is a Republican area. With a Republican alumnus base, and a Republican legislature. I am in absolute despair and am utterly depressed. Please give me advice.

You may be able to take that class at a community college if in the first two years. You could conceivably take the equivalent online at another institution and transfer it in. Finally, you could transfer to a different college and transfer the classes back for many Junior-level courses, but generally not Senior-level courses.

You might be able to take it as Pass/Fail and have it still count.

My son had an issue with class and the professor being non-responsive. Told him, go to the office, dean, president etc. and demand help. You’re paying for the course and as long as you’re putting in the work, should have a reasonable expectation of passing.

Told him if it was me, I’d book every hour of his office time that most professors are required to have. Son landed on meeting 1-2 a week and passed with a B. He was disappointed in not getting an A (grades are important to him) but he was a lot happier then when he was pulling a D or a C.

You know, there should be procedures for handling a “capricious grading” circumstance. Please look into those.

That is one way to hold your professor’s feet to the fire. If your university has a law school, they often will provide free legal advice, which can include how to handle such professors.

I think you’ve done it by reporting him. Who knows what protection he has within the corrupt, leftist system? You’ve done the right thing and now you have to keep fighting — standing up for fairness and decency even that right now you don’t want to, becwause it is hurting your academics. But you are stuck now.

More timid people would have sucked it up, tried to fake please him, and graduate. You were brave and bold and now you have to keep that up. Bravo or brava, and I would definitely try to reach Dennis Prager. Right now I think he is the one taking on the leftism in academia more than anyone else. If you could get on his radio show, I believe he would do what he could publicly to help you. He is fighting this very strongly.

Suck it up, pass e class, get a job and pay SS so that all the so called conservatives on his site can be conservative once they get back what they paid in “with interest”. Some of the hard core conservatives will be happy with full reimbursement of what they paid in. LOL.

This thread is a very good snapshot of where we are today in America.

There is no such thing as "academic freedom." Any one of us can go outside and declaim our opinions to the public, or publish them in printed form. An instructor in a classroom setting needs to defer to the formal curriculum.

An alternative, albeit a difficult one, is to make a conspicuous public show of standing up for your principles from start to finish, and you might become well-known for doing so and set a new world's record with your reputation points. Of course it's easier said than done, but I think it's worth mentioning. It's the kind of thing that gives "punch" to the rousing literature of the American founding.

Success is the best revenge. Keep your thoughts to yourself and give him the answers he wants. He’s already convinced and you will not sway him. Get what you can out of the class and then move on. Become a success and decry his ignorance and bias AFTER you’ve left his region of influence. IMHO
