Whatever I have works; that's all that matters to me.
And I'm most assuredly NOT going to pay for it!
That's correct. Both the article and all my comments are very clear on that fact.
Why? Did you find a statement to the contrary?
And the situation for Skylake CPUs is mixed. According to Microsoft, selected manufacturers will continue support for Win7/8.1 on Skylake CPUs, but all others are out of luck. The article has some pretty clear details and links to more info.
I’d certainly set a restore point as soon as possible so I could roll back any future updates if they trash my system. In fact, I just interrupted typing this to set one so I wouldn’t get caught flat footed.
I’ll do that tomorrow; thanks for the advice!

Windows is high maintenance, baby!
A nice thing about using Linux, when it comes to a bug or security issue - it’s fixed very quickly & the update is ready to be installed. Windows is like a huge ship that needs a lot of room to turn around, Linux is more like a tugboat - things get fixed much swifter.
But I use both Win 7 and Linux in “dual boot”, which means when the PC starts up, I can choose to use use either one. Both have their pluses & minuses.
As far as I'm concerned, Windows is a NO MAINTENANCE thing and always has been that. I turn on my laptop and just do whatever I want or need to do on it. If THAT is "high maintenance", then I'm the president of the world! LOL
If I had to "fix" something, it would stay BROKEN; so I have no idea what you're talking about.
For probably 95 percent of FR users this won’t affect them. Just more scare tactics by Linux advocates.
or from attractive women who claim they want to meet you.

Nancy Pelosi keeps e-mailing me. You mean I should not answer?
They're willing to lose a lot of customers, in order to get all the rest on Windows 10.
There are many vibrant conspiracy theories speculations about why this might be the case.
Personally I think it's just the advertising that is so prominent in Windows 10. And getting worse.
Microsoft has "monetized" the Windows desktop.

All I can suggest then is that you practice safe computing.
By the way, if you’re going to make a restore point as a backup plan, you should probably make 2 or 3 of them for extra backup, since sometimes a restore point just doesn’t work. It helps to have more than one to try instead if the first one doesn’t work.
Whats a restore point? and how do you set it...I have vista
No, Sir, I disagree.
This issue will affect most anyone who purchased a new computer in the last year or so, and anyone who purchases one in the future, with a modern CPU and the hope of running Windows 7 or 8.1 on it. Microsoft promised security/bug-fix support until 2020 for Windows 7 and 2023 for Windows 8.1. Windows 7 is still far and away the favorite flavor of Windows in use, and is holding its own rather better than expected against the slow climb of Windows 10.
So I would wager that probably more like a third of FR users either are already affected, or will be within the coming year or later. FReepers are Conservatives, not Luddites. :-)
Posting this information on how our fellow FReepers can do what they want: Run their chosen operating system -- Windows 7 -- on their new computer, seems entirely reasonable and potentially helpful.
BTW, I'm not a Linux advocate; I use it just like I use Win7 and Win10 and MacOS and Unix. I even caution people who want to switch from Windows to Linux that it ain't for everybody, and there's a learning curve. Geez, I run the Windows Ping List -- the Linux (Tech) Ping List is run by ShadowAce. Here's what I am, if you're interested.
MSFT’s pronouncements sound like government speak.
I am running Win 7 Pro and have had updates turned off for over a year with no downside. Gee, that was easy*.
As far as I’m concerned, Win 7 is my last OS.
On the other hand, maybe I’ve just been lucky.
* Disclaimer: I am using a good anti-virus program that updates itself at least daily, run weekly scans with the av program and Malwarebytes, use Ad Block Plus and Ghostery with my browser and am really careful where I go on the Internet.
A basic question for a non-techie:
I’m running Win 7 on a Dell desktop. How do I find out whether I’m affected by the upcoming MS update. I’ve seen the machine list on the Dell link above and need to now which machine I’m using (without unplugging everything and pulling it out from behind my desk). Is machine and chip information available via the control panel and if so, how do I access it?
I don't do banking on my laptop, pay bills, play games, nor go to weird sites; unless others find this site, Drudge, etc. to be "weird". I try to be as careful as I can be.
Yeah, we’re specifically ordering “Hybrid” Kaby Lake computers from HP for my hardware refresh this year. Basically, it’s guaranteed support for Windows 7.
Sorry, I don’t remember how to do it with Vista, but since this issue doesn’t appear to reach back that far, I’m not sure that I would worry. Haven’t they already cut support for Vista machines?
Thanks for the link to the various Linux versions. I’ve bookmarked it, as I’m pretty sure Linux is in my future.
