No-one likes being mistaken for someone else - especially if that someone else has been their sworn rival for more than a century.
So when Guns N' Roses yelled "Hello, Sydney" as they walked on stage in Melbourne, they were unsurprisingly met with a chorus of boos.
And to make matters worse, the veteran rockers weren't even on time.
Luckily, it seems they made up for it with a rousing concert - and a swiftly issued apology on social media.

Australia - it all looks the same through the booze induced haze.
At least they didn’t yell out “hey phoenix”.
He is the son-in-law of a rock and roll band.
Sydney? That’s where George Stephanapolous and his wife moved after Trump was elected!
Wait, that never happened. Is George a liar?
What? Sydney and Melbourne are both on the southeast side of Australia. Perth is in the West.
I saw that tour, ours was the first show after James’ accident so Metallica was a 5 piece. Man GNR sucked. Took them forever to get on stage, then they’d play 1 or 2 songs and leave for 5 minutes. Least professional band I’ve ever seen, and I was around for the heyday of garage punk and even those stoned high schoolers were better. People left in droves while they were on, including my group.
Was that during Slash’s heroin days? He claimed Axl was a major drama queen.
I think Slash had gotten clean by then. It was basically the break up tour. Metallica bitched about Axl endlessly after it was done, especially him cutting the GNR portion short the day James got hurt, leading to the riot.
The faux pax exhausted their patience. Their loyal fans were there cause they think G & R is one in a million. Many fans said that they used to love them, but now they want to kill them.
The Hetfield hair fire incident was in Montreal. The 2nd show was vancouver. My uncle had tickets so he got me along with 2 of his beer buds. I was 12 at that time so I was jacked for my show.
and people didnt forget the FIRST riot when they both didn’t show up. Years later, I still had tickets and Axl didn’t show up which created the 2ND RIOT trashing of BC Place. That same uncle of mine also was part of the crowd which burned down the hotel in vancouver in 1986 when a full 8,000 people tried to squeeze in a 1000 person capacity hotel just to see Metallica. After that incident, Metallica was banned in canada lol for 2 years. Good times haha
Vancouver sure likes to riot.
Yeah. It’s a no-fun city and there’s nothing to do there, that’s why I left. You do realize that we TRASH OUR OWN CITY after every Stanley Cup loss? No city does that after losing a championship.
I saw GnR w/ Metallica too, at the Oakland Coliseum.
They refused to use the same sound systems so there was an hour break between acts. I used the time to walk around and gawk at barfing girls.
I do remember that it was an awesome show, though.
Meh. Sydney, Melbourne, they’re both somewhere in Austria, right?
My older brother saw them both in Boston while on spring break. If the 2 front acts were Faith No More and Skid Row, they should have been in Oakland too. Barfing girls? lol That was a contest at OzzFest after 1999.
The opening act for the Oakland show(s) was Ice-T and Bodycount!
They sang their song “There Goes the Neighborhood”.
[sigh].....that’s why you WRITE THE NAME OF THE TOWN ON THE BACK OF YOUR GUITAR IN LIPSTICK.
Gawd, didn’t these guys learn ANYTHING in the 90’s?
Ice T fronted for the GNR Metallica show? Wow.
I used to love her But I had to kill her
