I had two cats declawed some 10-15 years ago. One cat handled it well. The other did not. As for me - I will never declaw another cat again. And I don’t recommend it.

But. This is a personal matter and should not be regulated by the gubmint.

I did it once. Would never do it again. You can train them to a scratching post.

I currently have three cats, and have previously had three other cats, all of were feral kitten saves from my front porch. All six were declawed, spayed, and brought into the house for their entire lives. I have a back porch, to which the cats can get to through a cat door, which is entirely enclosed in small (1") lattice, so they can "get outside" whenever they desire and remain perfectly safe.

My late wife decreed that no non-declawed cat would be allowed into the house. I felt that, in exchange for the declawing (and the spaying), we were giving our cats a completely safe life so that's what we did with the first kitten. She healed fine .. in fact, her paws healed before the spaying cut .. with no complications or problems. So every kitten that we've taken in since then have had the same procedures, all with no adverse reactions or problems.

I understand the idea that "declawing" is cutting off the first knuckle and don't particularly enjoy having it done to my kitties. With the first one, I tried trimming the front claws, but I guess the kitty could feel my apprehension and inflicted great bodily harm on me trying to escape every time I made the attempt.

My three late-kitties all lived in excess of 17 years and all died of complications due to their old ages. My current kitties are fat and happy. I feel that this procedure is an fair exchange to giving these kittens safe, happy, and long lives. If the procedure were outlawed nationally, or in Texas, I probably would not take in another cat or kitten, and I truly would hate that.

My declawed cat has no problems climbing trees and when it is warm enough to leave the back door open leaves multiple kills daily in the house. I think he is muslim, he likes to behead his victims and leave them in public places.

There are two scratching posts in the living room which have been sprayed with cat nip but the chair and couch are ripped to pieces. Plus, they have the whole outdoors.

I guess I should clarify .. only the front claws were removed. All of my cats have never been .. and would never be allowed to be .. outside of the house after declawing.

Oh...That is clever.

Imagine the mental gymnastics you would force a liberal to go through if you used that argument.

“Do you really want pet owners cutting off the paws of their little kitties? Cause that’s what you are going to force them to do if you outlaw declawing.”

NO!!!!

Declawing is like you taking your finger and putting it from fingertip to first joint into a guillotine and chopping it off. It is more than cruel. Diligent training and providing ample acceptable scratching posts, pads, etc. is more than possible, along with the intelligent choice of non-cat-attractive furniture. My cats don't scratch my furniture and use their scratching posts and cardboard scratchers all day long.

The Law of Unintended Consequences says that this will result in more cats being killed in “shelters” because more people will decide that having a cat is just too much trouble.

Yes.
I would never have an indoor cat.
My daughter brought a kitten home once, kept it in her closet for 3 weeks before I knew about it. The rule was No Cats.
Well ol' softie dad let her keep it.
Destroyed our furniture. Never again.

We have two 12 year old
cats that were declawed
(front claws) when we
got them as kittens from
a veterinarian. I haven’t
seen a tree they couldn’t
climb or a mouse they couldn’t
catch. Birds brought into the
house usually survive due to
them not being ripped apart by
the cats’ claws, if we rescue
them in time and haven’t been
eaten. My skin and couches
have remained intact also.
Passing a law to keep cats from
being declawed is just stupid.

My cat still climbed trees after being declawed.

I have two front feet only declawed Tom cats who also climb trees and catch pray. They mainly choose to be outdoors, but can come inside at will.

Why do people live in these authoritarian hellholes?

Our cat has been declawed for nine years. He still “sharpens” his lost claws. He still hunts constantly. He still catches chipmunks. When a larger animal threatens him he moves out of that area as if fired from a cannon.

Who are you to say what I can and can’t do with my property? Cats are not persons. Get over it.

“I’ve never had a cat declawed. Just can’t do it.”

On the flip side, all of my cats have been declawed and they were just fine. Then again, the closest my cats every came to being outside was looking out the window.

Ours always have been declawed (front only) and have lived long, healthy lives and 100% indoors. We brought in a feral, making 6 in the home and didn’t declaw her. She has never used her claws to harm the others, us, or destroy anything. She’s indoor only, too. We are lucky.

We wouldn’t declaw another if we had any more — which we won’t.

Good point. As long as abortion remains legal we should repeal all laws.

my wife had several when we got married - we had little money and our first set of livingroom furniture was old lawn furniture. We had a card table for a dining room and an 11" b&w tv

We bought our first couch that second year...a sleeper - expensive but worth it. Despite the claw poles, these cats tore it up. We had them declawed - but not before they destroyed that couch in about a months time...I cant recall having been angrier...ever & I never regretted doing that to them....

The cats hated me - and at the time I would keep my electric guitar in the corner...they sprayed on it once...I swear they did it in spite...and what really frosted me was despite the daily cleaned litterbox - they would crap and pee on the floor

useless creatures
