Judy Garland’s Ex-Husband Sid Luft Claims 'Wizard of Oz' Munchkins Molested 16-year-old Star

The former husband of screen legend Judy Garland claims that the actress was molested by some of the 'munchkins' on the set of her classic film The Wizard of Oz.'

Sid Luft, who died in 2005, wrote in a recently uncovered memoir that Garland was groped by the grown men despite that fact that she was only 16 at the time.

'They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small,' wrote Luft according to The Sun.

'They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress. The men were 40 or more years old.'

This is not the first time that mention has been made of inappropriate behavior by the munchkins on the set of Oz.

There were rumors at the time of 'dwarf sex parties' being held in the famous Culver Hotel (subsequently owned by John Wayne) where the actors who played the munchkins all lived during filming.

And there were also reports of wild evenings with rooms ransacked and drunken little people swinging from the rafters.

One horrified observer described the group as 'an unholy assembly of pimps, hookers and gamblers.'

Garland later described some of the munchkin actors by saying: 'They were drunks. They got smashed every night and the police used to scoop them up in butterfly nets.'

In fairness to Judy, the studio executives got her hooked on uppers and downers when she was still a child actress.

They needed her to deal with the long hours on the set and not much recovery time for rest.

It was straight up child abuse but was overlooked and covered up...like everything else in Hollywood.

And then there are those darker stories about Wilder and the Oompa-Loompas.

Can you imagine being groped by a munchkin? - gross.

It was reality for Robert Reich's ex-wife. :)

I’m afraid the only thing Americans can do now to atone for this dreadful period cinematic abuse is to boycott Dunkin Donuts.

I believe she had a long standing affair with Mickey Rooney (not a big man, he) from age 13 or so until she died.

I knew they were very good friends but I really thought it was platonic love. Mickey and she were busy with others at the same time. Not saying you're wrong, just news to me.

After seeing “Under the Rainbow” I convinced my family that there was a division of Nazi Midgets who rode German Shepherd dogs into battle.

Uh, no. The loony Mickey - who I admire for invading Obama’s office to complain about his long-suffering kids (all 20 or 30 of them) - was a nut that made the late Irwin Corey look like the man in the grey flannel suit. I’ve been too long studying film and its history to buy into nonsense from civilians like you.

Groped by a Munchkin? Is that the remake of Touched by an Angel?

I’ve read Stevie Nicks was with Joe Walsh, Timothy Schmit, Don Henley, maybe other band members. Passed Around by an Eagle?

Reminds me of a joke from a few years past.

Why do midgets get slapped so much?

‘Cause they’re always telling women how nice their hair smells.

Few can possibly imagine how sketchy, gritty, and non-glamorous life was the movie making business in LA in the 1930s and '40s. Not that the 50s and 60s were any better.

One of the best novels about the sleazy underbelly of 1930's Hollywood is Nathanael West's Day of the Locust. One of the characters in the novel, Abe Kusich, is a foul-mouthed and randy midget. I wonder if one of the Munchkins inspired the character.
