Do a few evening beers make your mornings un-beer-able? Does a vodka martini make your brain feel shaken, or stirred? Has a Dark N Stormy been clouding your thoughts?
For most people, the occasional night out is not a big deal but when a hangover becomes a regular part of your weekend routine its a sign something might not be right.
Its an alarming statistic that one in five Australian adults regularly drink harmful amounts of alcohol. This chronic alcohol use can cause liver failure, stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, damaged nerves, injured brain cells and an increased risk of some cancers.
It can take years of regular hangovers before people even consider whether they might have a problem, but sometimes youve just got to ask the right questions.
The following questionnaire can help you quickly screen your friends, family or partner. While this isnt a one-size-fits-all situation it is thought that if someone answers yes to two or more questions then it might be time to chat with your doctor to work out if alcohol is a problem for you.

“I always feel better after my morning Bloody Mary...”
Google `Smirnoff Brunch’ for a blast from the past. Could explain why tomato juice is my fave breakfast juice.
Bloody Mary for me is TJ, gin rather than vodka, Texas Pete & some Worcestershire.

It's why you drink and what happens to you (and others) when you drink that makes you an alcoholic.
If you think you are an alcoholic and want help, seek out your local chapter of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous).
If you are serious, they can help. You might get sober for someone else (wife, husband, child, boss, judge) but you won't STAY sober for anyone other than yourself. If you are looking to get sober for anyone other than yourself, you aren't done drinking yet.
It is sad truism that AA is not for people who NEED it. It is only for those who WANT it.

My mother was an alcoholic. I basically raised myself alone, so I am acutely aware of the problems of chemical addiction.
These are the original twelve steps as published by Alcoholics Anonymous (paraphrased for general substance abuse):
1. We admitted we were powerless over our addiction. That our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

I would also add one more important item: Do not do it alone.
Find someone. Anyone. Find someone you can absolutely trust and talk to (in person, not online, not on the phone) about what is going on in your life. If you have an SO already, that is wonderful. He/she probably already knows, but ask him/her for help anyway. If not, find someone to confess to. I don’t care who, a pastor, a relative, a close friend, a co-worker, but find someone. In my experience that is the most important thing you can do.
The real secret to 12-step is the meetings and the accountability stuff (another recovering addict checks up on you). That is the only way to do it.
My mother later became a significant leader of AA in my state, with almost 40 years of sobriety, and she sponsored innumerable others to recovery. It really does work.
Raleigh Hills dropout here! lol
The question that convinced me:
After taking a drink, can you guarantee your behavior?
I found I couldn’t no matter how sincerely I wanted to.
Used in a sentence, "to your health," would be, "à votre santé" which is the literal translation.

Maybe on their label they do?
Only one but they need a 12-step ladder.
