If you answer ‘yes’ to these questions, you may be an alcoholic

Do a few evening beers make your mornings un-beer-able? Does a vodka martini make your brain feel shaken, or stirred? Has a Dark ‘N’ Stormy been clouding your thoughts?

For most people, the occasional night out is not a big deal — but when a hangover becomes a regular part of your weekend routine it’s a sign something might not be right.

It’s an alarming statistic that one in five Australian adults regularly drink harmful amounts of alcohol. This chronic alcohol use can cause liver failure, stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, damaged nerves, injured brain cells and an increased risk of some cancers.

It can take years of regular hangovers before people even consider whether they might have a problem, but sometimes you’ve just got to ask the right questions.

The following questionnaire can help you quickly screen your friends, family or partner. While this isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation it is thought that if someone answers “yes” to two or more questions then it might be time to chat with your doctor to work out if alcohol is a problem for you.

As someone once said: I’m not an alcoholic. Alcoholics go to meetings. I’m a drunk.

No sense of humor? See post 16. The point of AA meetings to is to quit drinking. Thus Alcoholics are quitters. Drunks are just that Drunks.

Actually, it should be 20 questions:

1. Do you lose time from work due to your drinking?

2. Is drinking making your home life unhappy?

3. Do you drink because you are shy with other people?

4. Is drinking affecting your reputation?

5. Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?

6. Have you gotten into financial difficulties as a result of your drinking?

7. Do you turn to lower companions and an inferior environment when drinking?

8. Does your drinking make you careless of your family's welfare?

9. Has your ambition decreased since drinking?

10. Do you crave a drink at a definite time daily?

11. Do you want a drink the next morning?

12. Does drinking cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?

13. Has your efficiency decreased since drinking?

14. Is drinking jeopardizing your job or business?

15. Do you drink to escape from worries or troubles?

16. Do you drink alone?

17. Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of your drinking?

18. Has your physician ever treated you for drinking?

19. Do you drink to build up your self-confidence?

20. Have you ever been in a hospital or institution on account of drinking?

I don't drink, but I might be addicted to chocolate so...
  1. Have you ever thought about cutting do on your eating chocolate?
    • Gross!!!, who would cut "do" on something they are going to eat?
    • Assuming that was supposed to be "Cut down" then yes, yes I have thought about cutting down on my chocolate. Especially if it's thick. Put it on a plate and use a knife to cut down on it. Maybe I should reduce my chocolate intake after I cut this into bite size pieces.
  2. Have you been annoyed by others criticizing your eating chocolate?
    • I don't think others have actually criticized my chocolate eating, as I usually eat chocolate in private or others are eager to share in the chocolate eating. So No, I haven't been annoyed.
  3. Do you ever feel guilty about eating chocolate?
    • Sometimes. Especially if I eat a whole lb in one sitting. I blame my girl friend. If she is my girl friend. Sometimes it's hard to tell. Where's my chocolate. So Yes.
  4. Do you fix your hangover with the ‘hair of the dog’?
    • Does chocolate give me a hangover? Maybe high blood sugar, but do I feel the need to fix that with more chocolate? I( don't think so. Maybe a glass of milk which has sugar in it. ??? I'm not sure.

So, that's 2 yes and an unsure. I am addicted to chocolate. I'm going to learn how to make sugar free chocolate. Yeah, that'll break my addition. That's the ticket!!!

No, no, no, and no. I have an occasional drink, but alcohol is really not part of my life.

If you drink enough, you don’t have hangovers, or if you do, you forget them after a few more drinks. Trust me on that...

No x 20. While I have an occasional drink, I have no desire to drink on a daily, or even weekly basis. Sometimes I go months without a drink. It’s just not that important to me.

The questions are couched in the context of already extensive consumption. They fail to address common situations like “should I cut out a daily single serving?” or “I’m annoyed by someone who thinks one serving a day equals alcoholic, and who frequently badgers me about it” where a “yes” is not indicative of a problem.

“Alcoholic” is someone who can’t not drink. They’re addicted to drunkenness, who can’t say “no, that’s enough” to any number of drinks (including zero).

In my mid 60s I don’t do what I used to do but if I
happen to consume enough to earn a hangover I long
ago disciplined myself to take 3-4 Advils BEFORE going
to bed. That causes me to sleep through the hangover
and the only negative I have to deal with is an
occasional bout of dehydration. If I can persuade my
guests to join me in taking the ibuprofen they
usually thank me the next day.

More definitive questions:

Have you ever had the roof of your mouth sunburned?

Have you ever been run over by your own car while driving?

Did you ever brush your teeth with Preparation H?
