Sorry for a mini-rant. Just went on the Los Angeles Times website, what a MESS of ads.

OK sorry Jim about the single whining waste of space.

Really I am.

I don't usually post stuff like this. But I just am in the mood to rant after I clicked onto the Los Angeles Times website from the Drudgereport, based on a link there, and was clobbered with more nonsense than I believed possible.

Is the Los Angeles Times about to go under?

WHAT IN THE WORLD is with the website?

Very, very unprofessional, in my opinion.

Ugh.

There was a full-page popup originally, which I had to close. Then at the bottom of the page, another one popped up, then there were several smaller ads on the page itself.

LA Times needs to control its advertising, bigtime.

Feel free to cancel this if it is a waste of space.

:D

Just ranting.

My son put an app called “uBlock” in my browser, and I no longer have problems with ads.

Too bad I can’t lend you my son for a few minutes to do the same for you.

I don’t think the LA Times is alone in this practice. A lot of websites are more or less unreadable. Sometimes you get a little tiny window to read the story and the rest is ads.

Haha. Thanks.

Maybe someone without uBlock has had a similar experience.

Again sorry for the spam Mods. Just ranting.

I have an ad-blocker, but I’ve noticed the last few times I’ve tried to access the LA Times website, it tells me to unblock them, and it darkens the screen and covers it with that message. I won’t unblock them, so I no longer get to read the content. It’s becoming this way with more and more websites, but I’m not unblocking their ads. They can stuff it. I’ve had more garbage find its way onto my pc lately, and I am not interested in these sites enough to either become a premium member, or to unblock their ads.

Even on Drudge, I rarely ever click to the LA Times, NY Times, etc. .... there are usually alternatives to the fake news sites.

I get that ads are what allow news sites to make money, just like ads in newspapers did in the past. What bugs me, and I assume many others, is how obtrusive they’ve become. I haven’t installed a blocker just because I want quality sites to be able to earn income from my visits — but sites like the one you describe, and so many others I visit every day are making it seem tempting :/

i think it’s called AdBlock, but websites wont allow you to access theirs unless you whitelist them.

Obviously, they want you to subscribe. I’m not sure, but you might not see some ads if you subscribe - at least the popovers I’d guess.

uBlock Origin
Ghostery

Get the addons for your browser. Eliminates the crap you are complaining about. Both are free.

You are welcome.

I use Firefox with the NoScript and uBlock Origin add-ons. I just went to the LA Times website and no significant problems. Some of the images seem to be missing; but they are probably decorations I can live without.

I have seen at least one case where I was able to read articles that should have been blocked to me (as a non-subscriber or ad-blocker). I suspect that this was because NoScript was blocking the JavaScript that would have blocked me from seeing the article, so it came on through in-the-clear.

AdBlock is similar to uBlock.

What I do in this situation is temporarily disable the adblocker to slip past the screen dimmer, then quickly re-enable it when the page starts loading, killing the secondary and tertiary ads. I use Pale Moon browser (a Firefox clone), with Adblock Latitude, which has a handy menu at the bottom of the screen.
