Turkey dies after being tossed from a plane at an annual Arkansas festival

A small town tradition that many animal rights groups have called cruel took place this weekend when six live turkeys were dropped from a plane from 500 feet in the air. One died upon impact.

On Friday, one of the turkeys was found dead on the ground after being chucked from the plane. It's unclear how many die each year. Barb Klug, 66, of Bull Shoals collected the dead bird and says she plans to serve it for Thanksgiving dinner.

Full Title; Turkey dies after being tossed from a plane at an annual Arkansas festival PROMOTING the area's wild bird population

Comment: Reminds me of the funniest WKRP episode ever, perhaps the funniest episode of any sitcom ever.

Different strokes for different folk.

They must have been store-bought. Wild turkeys can fly.

Then again, maybe they were frozen turkeys and already “dead” before they hit the ground.

Thing about non-wild turkeys is that they are so stupid that it is about as hard to be cruel to them as it is to be cruel to an oak tree.

Less Nessman calling the action was one of the funniest things I have ever seen

“OHMIGOD THEY’RE HITTING THE GROUND LIKE SACKS OF WET CEMENT...”

The delivery of that line was a thing of beauty. The same goes for Les Nessman’s recounting of the event once he returned to the office.

Yea they can fly but not quite like an eagle and to just toss one out of an AC at 500 is a bit Fd’Up.

I got 20 plus out here on a bad day and the bow hunters love them but this plane stuff is a bit lame

Yeah. I was making a funny.

A while back there was an article about a team of testers trying to test the survivability of some jet plane windshields against large birds. They asked another team with experience in the area what they should do. The guys said they get frozen turkeys and use a “turkey canon” to “shoot” them at the windshields to see if they are strong enough to handle impacts at the expected relative speeds.

So they do the test and find that all of the turkeys are blasting through the windows like a bullet through a plate glass window. They ask the other team if they are doing something wrong and the other team asks, “did you thaw them out first?”

“Oh. Never mind...”

:-D

I guess turkeys really can’t fly after all!

The ones around my place can fly up into trees. I would think that they could at least glide to the ground. 500 feet is not that high - for a wild turkey anyway.
