A spike in radio signals coming from the direction of a sun-like star has excited astronomers.
The signals seem to be originating from a sun-like star known as HD 164595 in the constellation Hercules, around 95 light years away.
Scientists suggest they are likely to be the result of a natural phenomenon, such as 'microlensing', in which the star's gravity strengthens and focus signals from elsewhere.
But astronomers have also asked Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) to take a closer look at whether they could be a message from ET.

All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaints and its far too late to start making a fuss about it now.

Naron of the long-lived Rigellian race was the fourth of his line to keep the galactic records.
He had a large book which contained the list of the numerous races throughout the galaxies that had developed intelligence, and the much smaller book that listed those races that had reached maturity and had qualified for the Galactic Federation. In the first book, a number of those listed were crossed out; those that, for one reason or another, had failed. Misfortune, biochemical or biophysical shortcomings, social maladjustment took their toll. In the smaller book, however, no member listed had yet blanked out.
And now Naron, large and incredibly ancient, looked up as a messenger approached.
Naron, said the messenger. Great One!
Well, well, what is it? Less ceremony.
Another group of organisms has attained maturity.
Excellent. Excellent. They are coming up quickly now. Scarcely a year passes without a new one. And who are these?
The messenger gave the code number of the galaxy and the coordinates of the world within it.
Ah, yes, said Naron. I know the world. And in flowing script he noted it in the first book and transferred its name into the second, using, as was customary, the name by which the planet was known to the largest fraction of its populace. He wrote: Earth.
He said, These new creatures have set a record. No other group has passed from intelligence to maturity so quickly. No mistake, I hope.
None, sir, said the messenger.
They have attained to thermonuclear power, have they?
Yes, sir.
Well, that’s the criterion. Naron chuckled. And soon their ships will probe out and contact the Federation.
Actually, Great One, said the messenger,
reluctantly, the Observers tell us they have yet penetrated space.
Naron was astonished. Not at all? Not even a space station?
Not yet, sir.
But if they have thermonuclear power, where do they conduct the tests and detonations?
On their own planet, sir.
Naron rose to his full twenty feet of height and thundered, On their own planet?
Yes, sir.
Slowly Naron drew out his stylus and passed a line through the latest addition in the small book. It was an unprecedented act, but, then, Naron was very wise and could see the inevitable as well as anyone in the galaxy.
Silly asses, he muttered.
Oh for heaven sake mankind it’s only four light years away you know! I’m sorry but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs that’s your own regard. Energise the demolition beams! God I don’t know…apathetic bloody planet, I’ve no sympathy at all…

And what about your Ionic Storm Pollution Prevention Plan, it has to be filed at, and “approved by” the Galactic Hyperspace Planet Council, Department of Galactic Pollution Prevention and Elimination Systems Engineers.
And I don’t see in your data where you have addressed the Indigenous and Endangered Planetary Species Act of 2742, it is the law you know.
Our lawyers have already filed an injunction, and requested a Restraining and Cease and Desist order with the 27th Circuit Court of Appeals of the GHPC, citing the following.
1: Failure to file an appropriate and detailed Galactic Environmental Impact Report.
2: A detailed and approved IHMM, stipulating methods and locations of disposal of said materials.
3: Failure to post in a timely manner the ISPPP, that has been read and approved by the GHPC/DGPP&ESE
4: Failure to report on the impact of said planet contained in the rules and regulations of the I&EPSA of 2742.
Between the filing of these actions, court delays, appeals, and multiple new appeals, it should take no more than 2 billion years to clear these matters through the courts, at that point we will be extinct any way, so you are free to proceed with your project.
Unless it interferes with our neighbors at star number X-7639-Y3, Planet Porgor, they may object.
