freerepublic | Aug. 12, 2016 | greeneyes

Posted on 08/12/2016 4:04:37 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Heat index in southern MA today was 107.

And then everybody got rain except our little corner of the world.

scroll down to fall and winter gardening guides.

I’ve purchased from southern exposure for a decade or so and never had a bad experience.

well, here at the ‘farm’ we brought in a yard of compost for the garden boxes. getting started to switch over to early fall crops. Armenian cucumbers very productive this year.
installed a test watering system for one of the garden boxes, nothing fancy. will progressively install on the other boxes in time.

Picked my first watermelon today (Black Diamond)- it was ALMOST RIPE...
Oh well, I’ll let the next one get a deeper yellow ground spot.

Good discussion on picking a watermelon here: http://www.fifteenspatulas.com/how-to-pick-a-superstar-watermelon/

Even up here is SW Pennsylvania where overly hot and humid days are scattered throughout the summer, it has been hot and humid. I'm getting up early morning before work to do most of my gardening.

In June, I hired a landscaper to take out a useless steep slope on which I used to grow strawberries before I grew tired of fighting the weeds and rabbits. He made me a nice plateau to install a nice 40' x 14' Amish built barn which I really wanted for the extra storage. Now, all that is left of that slope is about a 45' x 8' wide area, partial sun in the front (south side) and mostly shade in the back (north side).

The soil is poor quality, high in clay and I've started clover and catnip in the softer parts. But I'm thinking about doing purslane in the remainder.

I have heard the plant is edible, fragrant and won't be bothered by rabbits. Best of all, it spreads easily and is low maintenance. What do Freepers know about purslane?

Might want to look at these:

some of this:

And some of this:

Our favorite are chinese cabbages. They do better for us in the fall. Slugs loooove them and they’re not too terribly frost tolerant so we usually end up covering them with at least one layer of the cloth stuff. I also put scavenged 2L drink bottles full of water under there for extra heat sources on chilly nights. Really cold nights I put plastic sheeting over the whole shebang but if the sun comes out the next morning you have to get it off quickly or you’ll pre-cook all your cabbages.

We live and garden on the shores of Humboldt Bay in the far northwest corner of the land of fruits and nuts of California where the summers are cool and foggy with temps in the mid 60s. Lady Bender's Zinnias plus a somewhat rare Red Crossbill at one of our feeders…

LOL, yes, heavy rain here in Rockland County.

They're loose leaf cabs. And i think she tried them before, but not sure. This year was amazingly different.

I'll give credit to my compost !

my wife's the green thumb. I try crap and get crap results.

She tells me, "you have to kill a lot of stuff before you learn how to grow it"

So, I'm still learning......

4 years ago I planted 8 apple root trees. I have two left

I have no idea what our heat index was or even the temp, since our thermometer is broken. But it was oppressive. Sorry you didn’t get rain.

We just had a doozy of a storm here. Had to get off the internet for a while. Still having trouble keeping on the server, and Netflix won’t play on the blue ray at all - keeps saying can’t access server.

Century Link claims it is DSL, but my dial up from the blue bug worked better than this. Do storms impact wifi? Even when satellite and internet have had problems in the past, I could use the wifi to get Netflix on Blue Ray.

Have been trying to get on Netflix on Blue Ray for over an hour - been having trouble with it all day. I was able to get it on the lap-top for a little while, but it kept reloading every other minute.

I might do it. However, I really think it is on the provider’s end, because the blue ray isn’t accessing Netflix like it used to and keeps saying something about the server.

Also my laptop is having trouble, and it usually works pretty well. So I think I’m just going to sign off and sleep on it to see what tomorrow brings.
