If you love pets and animals and sometimes pray for them, I'm asking if you could say a little prayer for our kitty Ciel. She is only five years old, a sweet, smart Balinese. She was perfectly healthy and active until two days ago, when she started vomiting foam and stopped eating.

Today we took her in to the vet and she has acute renal failure and diabetes. He gave her IV fluids, some meds to fight nausea etc, and a little insulin. We are to give her sub q fluids and try to get her to eat. He says that she can recover completely but she needs to eat and keep food down. He gives her a 60% chance of survival because she is young and it is acute.

We love her so. She is usually riding on my son's shoulders or fetching toys for us to throw. Or annoying her older "sister" cat. It's unbearable to see her like this.

Thanks in advance for your prayers.

Have a variety of cat food. If your cat won’t eat one food maybe kitty will eat something else. My mom had an ancient cat that had age-related renal failure and eventually died. Sometimes the cat would like one sort of food for a few days and then stop eating. So my mom substituted another cat food and the cat could be coaxed to eat that. So if your cat suddenly quits eating something it was used to eating, keep trying with a different food and maybe the cat will eat.

Thoughts and prayers are with you from my four cats and I. Be assured we fully understand and hope for nothing but the best for Ciel.

Animals indeed are a blessing and a concern of God, and both Jewish and Christian scripture backs up the idea.

Say a prayer for the children starving in India, if it burdens your heart. Nobody says you shouldn’t.

Make sure, if you feed chicken baby food (an excellent eating inducer for cats reluctant to eat), that it doesn't have garlic or onions in it, as both are toxic to cats. There is also a concentrated calorie-rich food supplement in a tube meant to get some calories into cats that don't want to eat or to supplement the diets of nursing mothers. That is Nutrical, which you can get at Petco or other local pet supply stores.

You can liquify the baby food or Nutrical by adding a bit of water to make it easier to feed to the cat in a feeding syringe. Those are made especially to feed baby birds, sick cats & dogs, etc. They don't have a needle or rubber gasket and are made, unlike injection syringes, to use over and over again. You can get feeding syringes at pet supply places like DrsFosterSmith.com. With respect to urgent need, you could use whatever syringe your vet can give you until this would arrive.

Take heart. Two of our beloved cats incurred the same condition. We learned so much with the second cat that I wish I could have given the same help to the first. (The first also suffered from cancer.)

Here is an important thing I learned with both of them. The vet recommended we use a medicated diet to help ease the burden on her kidneys. Yet the medical diet had no appeal to either cat. I knew they would starve if confined to the medicated diet, so instead I fed them food that perked them up and made them happy—fancy feast, especially the types with gravy. There was nothing to lose and the second cat survied FIVE YEARS on this diet, along with grocery store kibble. She could have gone longer, but ultimately her mind was slipping and we then put her to sleep due to her diminished quality of life, at 18 or 19 years of age.

Also extremely vital were sub-qutaneous fluids, as your vet may have told you. The vet told us that no cat survives longer than three years with this condition, and as I’ve said, ours survived FIVE years and could have gone further.

At first sub-q fluids seem a difficult procedure but it gets easier with experience. For our obstreperous cat it was a big challenge until we found something called a “cat sack” on Amazon. With this cloth device, we could zip her up and control her while we administered the fluid, which eventually we did every other night. The vet didn’t tell us about the “cat sack,” we had to discover that ourselves.

Invest your time and love and you may well find Ciel is having a big rebound and can have lots of happy life to come. I certainly hope and have prayed so. These friends are so special.

Yaelle, prayers for you and little Ciel.

I had a scare with my baby (Irish Setter) 3-4 months ago.
Took a lot of $$$, thank goodness we’ve been taking our pets to our vet for 40+ years. They allow me to make payments.

Molly will be 11 in a few months. I know I can have her a few more years, so I enjoy her each day.

God blessed us giving us pets.
May God grant you Ciels company for some time to come.

Thanks!

Update to all: your prayers are having an effect. At this last feeding, we made a soft scrambled egg in butter with a pinch of Celtic sea salt, as I read that minerals are greatly needed with kidney problems. Then we whirred it up in the food processor with spring water and put a bit of it in the tiny syringe. Wrapped up Ciel and got it bit by bit into her mouth, and nothing came out except her usual clear drool. Afterward, she went to a soft spot and sat in a slightly more comfortable way and closed her eyes. Before, she was just sitting on the floor or a hard surface in “meatloaf position” looking uncomfortable, with glassy eyes open or half shut.

It was like she was resting better. Thanks for your prayers, another feeding in 20 mins. Will try more chicken baby food. There has been no vomiting since we got back from the vets.

Did you ever stop to think that perhaps God created these beautiful creatures to help His children thru the long suffering we have in our lives? These creatures bring comfort and love into peoples lives.

That is a very beautiful thought.

I used to watch a show called "Pet Heroes," I think. There was one cat that detected a person with low insulin and wouldn't stop meowing until the lady's husband woke up. The kitty saved her life. There are countless stories of cats and dogs saving and rescuing people. Consider police dogs, military dogs, etc.

God gave us an enormous gift. If my husband weren't allergic to cats, I would be more familiar with them, but they are amazing. :)

Domesticated animals are truly wonderful.

And, btw, before my Dad died recently (April 16), my sister brought her kitties and pug dog to see him... it gave him great comfort.

Yes, that is what we did. She is taking in so little that one jar could last a long time. Tomorrow we will try to get her closer to her calorie needs, if possible. We figured it’s 100 something. She only weighs 6 lbs. She is small.
