What is it like to fire a Daisy BB gun?

What's it like to fire a Daisy BB gun? It's an experience I'll never forget. Everybody knows BB guns are scary looking and ought to be banned, but I thought I would try to shoot one without any preconceived notions. What I encountered changed me forever.

I took a deep breath and determined to enter a Wal-Mart. A "greeter" met me with, "Howdy, welcome to Wal-Mart." I'm from the north. We don't say "Howdy". I sneer back at the microaggression and strain to hold back tears of rage. Barely controlling myself, I asked where I could find a BB gun. He directed me to "sporting goods," still smiling and gloating over his slyly delivered offense.

I go to the "sporting goods" section, a perfect charnel house where implements of sulfur, death, and destruction are openly and brazenly sold. I notice a BB gun just lying on a shelf. I reach for it as if it was a poisonous snake, wondering if it will go off when I pull it off the shelf. That's right, a shelf. Where anybody could get it.

I go to the counter and the death merchant asks me if I wanted BBs to go with it. He even had the audacity to offer me "Copperhead" brand BBs! How could this inbred hick not know that I see a therapist twice a week to treat my herpephobia?

I buy the gun and the recommended BBs. I'm dizzy going out to the parking lot. A passing stranger, attired in a camouflage assault t-shirt, asks, "Sir, you okay?" "How dare you assume my gender!" I shout back. "Sorry, just checkin'," he said as if my health was any of his business. But the worst was yet to come.

When I was a kid, I was outside firing my BB gun up in the
air. - Not aiming at anything. - A bird dropped to the
ground out of nowhere. So, my aim sucks.

I really appreciate this thread. It seems like this sight has lost it's humor.
Series and paranoia all the time makes for a very depressing website.

I use to shoot straight up to see if I could come back down into my face. Finally I saw that BB coming right back for my eyeball and moved just in the nick of time. Satifaction achieved. No need to do it again. I had the Monte carlo stock lever action Daisy. I liked to wing flies for my lizards to eat.
(close range when they are sitting). Best present ever.

Certainly capable of firing 700 bb’s per minute with multiple clips.

My Daisy 990 multi-pump can fire pretty fast, but it would get tiring to pump between each bb to try for 700 per minute. That's the downside. The upside is not having to mess with CO2 cartridges although it can use them.

Yes, that’s his name. I had forgotten it. Thank you! ;-)

My Mother used Hydrogen Peroxide. It didn't hurt and got really bubbly if your Wound was dirty.

My Friend's Mother used Mercurochrome. It hurt like hell. Must have been the Mercury.

Unless there was a Bone sticking out of a Limb, we went to my House for Medical Attention.

Mercurochrome is what we called monkey blood, felt like fire.

I always added a pellet first then added 2 or 3 bbs. the pellet kept the BBs from rolling out. Got good velocity and a spread of projectiles.

> Mercurochrome is what we called monkey blood, felt like fire.

I don't remember mercurochrome hurting that much. It -was- a deep red like blood, and it lasted, so everybody knew you'd had some for a week or more.

What REALLY stung was merthiolate, which was also reddish but a little lighter with a yellow-green tinge to it.

Now THAT felt like fire. Unfortunately I don't know what it was chemically... "merthiolate" is a poorly defined name applied to many different disinfectants.

My Friend’s Mother loved that stuff.

I always tried to make sure I didn’t scrape an elbow or knee when I was over there playing.

I tried and failed. It was painful, especially as your Friend laughs at you when his Mother put it on the wound.

Could have been it.

Stung like the dickens.

I have never used the term “stung like the dickens” before, so it must have been more painful than my mind lets me recall. I was obviously scarred for life. LOL

Were you allowed to run with scissors?

Were you allowed to put a pencil in your pocket with the tip pointing upward?

Did hair grow on the palm of ones hands?

Did ones face EVER freeze that way?

Did anyone ever go blind from ‘doing that’?

When I was good my mother let me lick the frosting off the beater.
If I was REAL GOOD, she would unplug it first.

Ah, memories....

Is that Crossman Powermaster 760 still around!? The last time I saw the model I had, it was about 50 years ago. I had one of the very early years Ruger 10/22’s that came out back around then and that is what I mostly used for plinking. I can’t even remember how I ended up with that Crossman!

merthiolate probably had iodine in it, based on the colors you describe.

I had 20/10 vision when I was a kid. And hearing so good I could hear a mouse fart
In the neighbor’s house.

I practiced shooting empty beer bottles with my Daisy 1894 behind a tavern right off Route 66 in western Oklahoma.

One day I was sitting on the back patio and I spotted a hornet land in the top of a pine tree.
I heard it first, making a low buzzing noise.
I took careful aim ... shot, and it took off, making a high buzzing noise.
I had shot its nertz off.

I went to bed and cried like a little girl. I had only meant to wing it.
