I stopped reading after - “American Civil War”.
America NEVER had a “Civil War”.

Brooks challenged Burlingame to a duel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls to circumvent the U.S. ban on dueling.

There seem to be a variety of accounts of this running around the net, but those crediting Burlingame as opting for Canada deserve more credence than your version, as the challenged party was the one who normally selected location. Burlingame opting for Canada for reasons of law ipoints to a farce, as dueling laws in Canada were much more strictly enforced: if some one, challenged to a drinking contest, chose Saudi Arabia as a venue to avoid the laws against public drinking in New York, I would smell a rat.

It sounds to me that Burlingame wanted to set Brooks up for an attempted murder charge.

I have my doubts about the 90% and suspect you simply made that figure up on the spot.

"With most of the tariff revenue collected in the South and then spent in the North, the South rightly felt exploited. At the time, 90% of the federal government's annual revenue came from these taxes on imports."

You must be fun to be married to.

Actually, ladyjane’ s figures are fairly accurate, but a bit more complicated than you present.

The secession was prompted by the election of the Republicans with their Morrill tariff, spending on improvements in the north, and their fire eaters in Congress.

The war began in Lincoln's office after he discovered that secession would stop the revenue. Secession and slavery were afterthought excuses.

It’s good to read FR and learn that many of our Freepers know history.

The tariffs were funding the government. There was no income tax at that time.

When Lincoln figured out that succession was going to stop the flow of money he pulled the slavery issue out of his pocket. Up until that time it was a non-issue.

Follow the money. Even Abraham Lincoln followed the money.

I’m afraid that while there are Freepers who do know history, they are in a distinct minority, and this does not bode at all well for the population at large.
