But wait a minute. You mean there wasn’t no bipartisanship or Gang of 8 back then?

“The Caning of Senator Charles Sumner (R).”
At first glance, I was ecstatic. Then I actually read it.
What I thought I saw was Senator Charles SCHUMER. Instead it was Senator Charles SUMNER.
What a letdown. I was so happy, now the whole day is shot.
Crap!

Slavery was a scourge then and now Yes. We should demand reparations from the blacks who sold their brethren into slavery.

Sumner was a Prima donna as per his own ex-wife. He probably deserved the caning as do most officious intermeddlers.

I started reading Charles Sumner’s “Crime Against Kansas” speech. It is awesome, 106 pages. It took him two days to deliver. Everyone should read it, not only for the historical context but also for the eloquence of the oratory. They certainly knew how to give speeches in those days.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

Nobody needs reparations. I doubt if any are still alive. Other Africans sold them into slavery, and people here purchased them and owned them.
It was indeed a scourge. And the short sightedness of those southerners has caused America no end of misery that last to this day. That’s the lesson.

Evidently Senators were exempt from assault and battery charges.
