The secession was prompted by the election of the Republicans with their Morrill tariff, spending on improvements in the north, and their fire eaters in Congress.
The war began in Lincoln's office after he discovered that secession would stop the revenue. Secession and slavery were afterthought excuses.

The tariffs were funding the government. There was no income tax at that time.
When Lincoln figured out that succession was going to stop the flow of money he pulled the slavery issue out of his pocket. Up until that time it was a non-issue.
