I had minor stroke a year ago. Did a face plant on the tile floor. The fall drove my upper front teeth through my bottom lip. I lost one upper tooth and the rest were forced out of alignment. I had to wear braces (at age 73) It was a real hoot sitting with the 12 year old’s at the orthodontist. After the braces, I started the implant procedure with a wonderful periodontist. They first implanted a coil of cadaver bone to let that graft to the upper jaw. That took about six months and then they attached the permanent tooth. It looks and feels great. Very spendy, but because it was an accident, Medicare covered most of it.

Various people have already posted some of these, but here's my advice, in no particular order:

even if your dentist says your dental insurance includes implant benefits, check and get it in writing with your insurance company to be SURE

my dentist called me the night before implant surgery to advise they made a mistake telling me insurance covers implants.. and that i would have to pay it all myself

that, concerning one of America’s largest dental insurance plans. so....be sure of YOUR costs and WHO is gonna pay ...before letting your dentist start the jack hammer drilling on your head

or else you will get the full bill in the mail

I have an implant in my front tooth #8. My tooth was knocked out/broken from a T-bar at Squaw mountain in 1977. I’ve had 4 posts, 5 caps, one major bone infection and one cronic infection.

When the last post broke the dentist said it was an implant or bridge.

I had what was left of the tooth pulled, and a graft inserted. That took about 4 months to heal. Then I had the implant base and an abutment installed. That had to heal about 4 months. Then I had a temporary cap installed and finally the full cap.

All in it took roughly 11 months, start to finish.

My insurance covered half of the final cap, or about $400 and the extraction at about $200. The rest of the process cost me roughly $4500 out of pocket.

I am VERY happy with the results. I am advised not to eat corn or other stuff that stresses it but sandwiches and whatnot are not a problem.

It’s not that much more expensive than a bridge, and it’s a whole lot better.

And as for as the guy who says you have to replace it in fifteen years (I don’t believe it), a bridge does not last forever either.

I had one done about six years ago and I fractured two more teeth and had them pulled last month. Have them pulled by the surgeon who is going to do the implants because there are such things as ridge preservation that must be taken into account. They fill the hole with cadaver bone and let it heal for four months. It takes a couple of weeks for the gums to totally heal. They actually heal faster with the implant preparation.

To me there is no decision to be made. Implants are far superior and not that much more expensive than anything else you can do, like a bridge.

Mrs. Slim did, it was a night mare. The first time one post didn’t seat well so it had to be redone. When she finally got the crowns, one popped off and had to be reinstalled. Two years start to “finish” and we’re not sure what will happen next.

I had implants done in Tijuana by an excellent dentist. Not the least expensive but much less than USA. I am very happy with results. Be sure and check what manufacturer of “screw” they use, big difference in cost to dentist for inexpensive Chinese.

Anyone wanting name of my DDS can pm me. Speaks fluent English nice clean office. Family of dentists.

I kept breaking off crowns on my left upper eye tooth.

A cousin with the same problem recommended that an oral surgeon pull the offending tooth and replace it with a screw with a head to mount an artificial tooth designed to fit the screw head.

I still remember the oral surgeon cursing as he used a wrench to torque the post into my jaw. He used injectable lidocaine to numb the procedure will took about an hour. My jaw was sore for a few days. Aleve worked for the pain and wasn’t needed after a few days.

My dentist then fitted a ceramic replacement tooth made from space age stuff. That was over twelve years ago. The faux tooth looks good.

I only notice it, if I eat really cold ice cream on that side of my mouth.

One of our sons had to have the same tooth replaced with the same method, and he is doing great about 6 years later.

You need an oral surgeon to pull the offending tooth and to rachet in the the screw head to attach the new replacement. A good dentist can do that easily with basically the new ceramic glues to hold the new tooth in place on the screw head.

Yup, just had an implant for my missing #15. Got the screw post imbedded 4 months ago, got the new tooth two weeks ago. No pain and now I can chew on both sides!

No dental insurance, so it cost me $4K.

Make sure there is no allergy to nickel. The best implants have a small amount of nickel.

I am in the middle of that. I have had the posts and am scheduling the appointment for the rest. The posts feel strange initially but it is no big deal.

Peridontist quoted me 18K for 3 teeth and two bone grafts. I have diabetes Type 2, never had a cavity or any tooth problems until I got diabetes. Now I have peridontal disease which caused 3 teeth to be removed, two being my two front teeth. At my age I said Oh no, no way, I could take a trip around the world for that. So I got denture. Works great and only cost 1200.00.

He did tell me that with peridontal disease, sometimes the posts don’t take, even with a bone graft. So, another reason I went with denture.

I agree with you totally. I had mine finished at the beginning of 2015. It took an additional bone graft to repair mine to it took over a year to complete. I am so happy with the results. The temp tooth is a total pain. You have to remove it to eat, which for me that was really embarrassing situation. I avoided so many social dinners or eating in public. My missing tooth was in the front so it was obvious to anyone when I talked or smiled.

My childhood dentist was the cause of all of this by not referring me to an orthodontist. If I could have found him while going through all of this, well lets just say it wouldn’t have been pretty.

I have 3 of them. They work fantastic. But they are expensive. Some insurance plans are better than others. Most only pay 40-60%.
