It might be a little too early to get excited about anything in the far-off month of August, but six legendary Ford performance cars about to pique your interest, and then some.

Every year, the world’s rarest and most valuable classic cars flood onto California’s sunbaked coastline in August for the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance—an event that has become known worldwide as the premier celebration of the automobile.

It’s a must-see for automotive window shoppers, as is RM Sotheby’s accompanying auction for those actually interested in buying. This year, the auction house will sell-off six rarified Ford and Shelby vehicles from enthusiast and dealership owner Jim Click’s esteemed collection. The highlight? This jaw-dropping 1966 Ford GT40 Mark I, which could sell for upwards of $4.25 million.

You are correct, the typical racing transaxle of the era could not take the massive torque American V8’s could produce. That is why Jim Hall put a so-called automatic in his USRRC white Chaparrals of the early to mid 60’s. The torque converter did not subject the gears to the higher shock loads of the manually shifted transaxle.

I have a 66 GT. Nothing unique like these high dollar cars. But it is a great looking car.

I keep thinking someone will offer me big bucks for it. I don’t expect $6 mil...

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

...is marvelous.

I almost hit a Ferrari out there once. Odd, tinny little horn saved me.

Ahhh, the car and owner that single handedly killed the finest road racing series the world has ever seen, the CanAm.

There is a wing here at the Petroleum Museum devoted to the white cars. I know the guy that restored them all and is the only person to drive every Chaparral ever made. They all run and are started and driven enough about every two months to keep oil and systems operational. Sometime Hall himself will fire one up and drive it around the museum property and they sometimes take them to places like Laguna Seca and drive several at once on the track.

I used to watch them all race back then at Mid Ohio and the USRRC and CanAm was a sight to behold.

The absolute best thing about THX 1138 was the chase scene!
