Ghostbusters trailer is most disliked in YouTube history
UK Guardian ^ | May 2, 2016 | Catherine Shoard

For a film to break records before its release is usually a good sign. But such records tend to be for advance ticket sales or most trailer views – they do not tend to register unusually high levels of online dissatisfaction.

When the first look at footage from Paul Feig’s female-fronted Ghostbusters reboot debuted in March, the reaction encompassed outrage not only that the beloved comedy was being remade, but that the lead characters’ genders would be altered.

I would put Ghostbusters almost on the same level with Caddyshack as the type of movie where it is a terrible idea to remake.

Once again, if the person is competent at the job, fine; if chosen only for some unrelated factor taking precedence over competence, bad.
Judi Dench acting “M” was fine because she played the role with exemplary competence. Lucy Liu likewise would be quite competent at any role she chose. The stereotypical obnoxious b in the new Ghost Busters, not so much.

Female characters cannot carry a movie. When will Hollywood realize this?

I heard this also happened in the CBS series “Elementary”, which is a Sherlock Holmes inspired series. In that series, Dr. Watson is a woman.

Elementary works pretty well. She started out as his sober companion and went from there.

I actually like Lucy Liu in that role. The show does certainly have its leftist SJW talking points on occasion, but overall it's clever.

I tried watching the cop buddy movie she made with Sandra Bullock but turned it off halfway.

I made it 20 minutes.

Hollywood reboots tend to take a great movie and turn it in to some PC political statement. Who wants to watch those nasty looking women make woman jokes? And with that black woman actress’ character it just shows you how HOllywood continues to view and cast black women. Loud, rude, big, and profane.

The idea of Dr. Watson being a woman is an old one, and promoted by Rex Stout, creator of the well-regarded Nero Wolfe series.

Certain moves are classics; they stand alone decades later, and should never be remade for ANY reason, including SJW posturing.

Broadway show Hamilton with half the founding fathers recast as black, Ghostbusters with women leads, a woman Sherlock Holmes - it’s sort of sad to watch people so desperate for approval and lacking in trust in their abilities to get there through their own creativity and effort have to copycat others to prove their worth....

“Elementary” is very good, it’s in its fourth or fifth season. What bumped me about it initially is, Lucy Liu was cast as the female (de-frocked) Dr Joan Watson. The casting in the show is spot on. The mysteries are all new. Some episodes are way better than others (I’ve seen ‘em all). The CBS website streams the most recent five episodes of all their current shows (”The Big Bang Theory” for another example).

In brief, Sherlock is a recovering heroin addict, in NYC, works as a consultant with the NYPD, is very eccentric in his interests, basically a very entertaining show, Lucy Liu notwithstanding. I think she’s put pressure on to be a bit too much more than Holmes’ protege, and I find that PC and annoying.

Interesting to see (IMDB site) that Bill Murray's in the cast, must be a brief appearance, although Sigourney Weaver is also listed. One rumor a few years back, when the original cast was still with us in entire, was that Murray hated the one script he was sent so much, he ran it through a shredder and mailed it back to Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd. Ackroyd denied the story.

...Melissa McCarthy...

Never paid attention to her until recently. Stopped on "Gilmore Girls" today, and found her immediately off-putting.

Lousy "actress" for an overly ridiculously written character that made me immediately change the channel.

Well, Nigel Bruce did a number on John Watson, both in film and radio.

Liu does bring back the ACD "serious" character.
