‘She’s Pretty!’ Blind Son Sees Mom For First Time
KFOR ^ | APRIL 30, 2016 | Dallas Franklin

It was an unforgettable moment for the mother and son.

Chris Ward's eye muscles never fully developed, making it impossible for him to see clearly, WDBJ reports.

"It's been an inspiration to me because he's never complained about it," Marquita Hackley said about her son's condition.

In the past, doctors told the 12-year-old's mother there was nothing they could do to help her son.

Recently, Chris and his mother traveled to Washington, D.C. to test out a relatively new technology called eSight.

Using special glasses, Chris saw his mother for the first time.

"Well when I saw my mom for the first time, she was pretty," he said.

It was an emotional moment for Chris' mom.

"I just broke down and cried," his mom said about the experience. "It was just amazing because he's never been able to see details like that."

Unfortunately, insurance will not cover the $15,000 glasses.

"It was kind of a low blow. Because of course it's something you'd love insurance to be able to cover or at least part of it," Hackley said.

Hackley set-up a fundraising page on the YouCaring website in an effort to raise money for the glasses.

Chris' classmates also planned to hold a fundraiser to help bring down the costs.

Hm. Here's the eSight website:

I don't understand how it corrects vision, if it does.

“The enhanced video is sent back to the headset and displayed on two, powerful Organic-LED screens in front of the user’s eyes. Typically, these full color video images can be clearly seen by the eSight user with unprecedented visual clarity – in essence breaking through most underlying eye conditions that cause their blindness.”

It’s an image enhancer. This isn’t new.

It’s better than previous because OLED, but that article is a puff-piece.

I know this sounds strange, but only $15,000 for these glasses? If it was covered by insurance, the price tag would probably be another $100,000 higher.

Sad government pays for illegals’ healthcare and sex change operations in prisons, but this sweet young man can’t get help?

I’m lost here. Why would you type the word “creepy” in regard to this story?

Well, it was not directed to the poor chap with the vision problem.

It is the fascination with every awful medical problem and misery of strangers that the media has adopted. I find all of it creepy. Every medical misery that has speaking victims seems to be aired.

It is none of our business, we can’t do anything about it pro or con, and it is usually offered by the hospital, doctors, or foundations to use these pathetic situations as fundraising opportunities.

In my town our local news has made it a permanent segment, like the traffic or the weather, to parade every dying child.

Whether the story is a glimpse of good news, or bad, I am just sick of it.

Until you or your family needs help.

Ok that sheds more light on things. I know, it's the Internet p, and determining one's meaning isn't always self evident.

I'm not sure I share your opinion, but that makes the world go round. I find some hope in life and mankind from time to time by hearing of something good for a change rather than all the death and hate that so easily finds its way into the news.

cheers

not strange to say at all.

It’s the way it should be. imho

health medical care is so high due to middleman “insurers” and liability “insurance” due to suing being so many lawsuits.

15k sounds even too high if the maker truly made them to
1. help people’s vision
2 wants them accessible to more people.
3. plus think of all the precipitous good to come, wearer’s personal current quality of life improves, family/friend relationships can become richer, wearer can go on to pursue and accomplish things unthought of before, etc.

my dad explained to me years ago, why sell a cookie at $1 and only sell 2, when you can sell them at 50 cents and sell so many more?

and think of all the “insurance” types, home, auto, pet, vacation, etc etc it’s crazy to pay monies monthly in hopes nothing goes wrong, and most times nothing does.

like in prescription drugs, the one that works has to pay for all the ones that didn't

say they start ten different drugs that either don't perform as they hoped or display bad side effects but the eleventh one works well with no side effects, that ONE has to pay for itself and the other ten that didn't

same thing in hardware

I guess these pathos stories appeal to you and that is why they air them. Ghastly fascination is really at the heart of it. I am guessing that you know the location of every gunshot to the Littleton victims and the dying words of the latest “Make a Wish” victim.

I have confronted more personal tradgedy and loss than you and the next five people you know. But, unless there is a point other than someone’s fundraising, these are private affairs, in my opinion. Not for prime time TV.

The images projected onto organic LED screens must then be processed by a defective human visual system. I did not see an explanation of how the eSight apparatus could compensate for vision problems, beyond its zoom and contrast-sharpening functions. Maybe that’s everything.
