Its 3 p.m. on Arthur Avenue in The Bronx, and Filomena Magavero settles in for a late lunch inside the venerable Marios, a favorite Italian restaurant on this strip of Old World butcher shops, fish stores and bakeries. She sips a gin martini (Is there any other kind? Magavero gamely asks), and orders filet of flounder oreganata.
Fish is my mainstay, says the diminutive and neatly coiffed Magavero, eyes sparkling. Plus, I grew up eating legumes, and I still like my lentils and chickpeas. As for the martini? I have one whenever I eat out which is about five times per week but I dont drink at home, because I never want to drink alone.

Pizza!
vino for this Italian.
italians, despite a heavy creame butter sweets diets, heavy smoking, and affinity for alcohol (No I’m not saying italians are lushes) have always live long lives- and some attribute it to the fact that they had their big meals mid day, and worked off the food for the remainder of day, then ate light at night- they work hard jobs in the fields, gardens, on the land etc-
Researchers were astounded that their eating and drinking habits didn’t seem to affect how long they lived (and there has been research into why more Italians weren’t getting cancer despite beign heavy smokers- a few theories exist about hwy)
Had a number of Italian friends over the years from upstate NY, then NJ near Atlantic City in the mid 50’s, and Massachusetts around Lunenburg and Fitchburg, MA was full of them. Great food and wine. I recall in 1975 $1.99 an LB live lobsters. Yes, most were chickens, but; if one looked he could easily find 1 1/2-2 plus pounders. De Moulas in Fitchburg, MA was a great Italian market. I used to go on Saturdays after being at Hampshire Hills on Friday night. I miss good Italian food here in Nashville.
I haven’t decided yet what to make for dinner tonight. It’s either lentil soup with pasta and parmesan or pasta alfredo with leftover chicken marsala with mushrooms tossed on top.
For once a recent study (funded by who?) got something correct. Gee, protein, plus fruits and veggies are good. What they left out is certain fats needed in the human body. Let's see what they actually got wrong before this HUGE announcement:
1. Over-population will kill off a third of the world population;
2. A new ice age is coming;
3. There is no difference in the mental/emotional make between boys and girls - Bruce Jenner notwithstanding;
4. The Ozone layer is shrinking and we all die from cosmic radiation;
5. We're running out of fossil fuels;
6. The Sun revolves around the Earth;
7. Sail far enough and the ship will go over into the abyss;
8. Cholesterol is the cause of heart attacks;
9. Tryglycerides is the cause of heart attacks;
10. Fat is the cause of heart attacks;
11. Only saturated fats are the cause of heart attacks;
12. Internal combustion cars and factories are the cause of global warming;
13. Number 12 is the cause of global climate change;
14. The seas are rising due to melting glaciers;
15. Dark matter exists;
16. Dark matter can't be proven to exist;
17. My doggie poops on the papers at all times;
18. No doggie poops on the papers at all times;
19. I like looking at attractive women, therefore I'm a misogynist and a potential rapist in my twisted male admiration for the female body;
And best of all...
20. Islam is a religion of peace, so say the sociologists, politicians, and the hippies.
Although this is an engineering point question (who I respect more than theoretical scientists):
The Mustang was the first 60's muscle car. Correct?
My favorite Italian dish: bistecca alla griglia. Perfetta!
Wifey is the best Italian cook evah. She learned from my dad who loved to cook, and eat. Cioppino is definitely a favorite.
Okay, I cook quite a bit; and, I prefer Italian-style food and cooking; but, this is a new one on me. Could you provide a translation, and, perhaps, a recipe?
It means “grilled steak”! Discovered it in Naples of all places. Beefsteak grilled, or pan broiled & seasoned.
Google “bistecca alla griglia”, then hit the translate option & check out images & recipes.
FWIW my fave pasta dish is spaghetti carbonara; there’s a huge debate as to where & when this dish originated.
5.56mm
I am envious.
Meat ravioli and dago red are good or you?
