This is What Depression Feels Like
The Harvard Crimson ^ | 4/12/16 | Morris

Posted on 04/12/2016 11:23:11 AM PDT by pabianice

You eat, but you aren’t able to taste your food. You try to write your paper, or work on your p-set, but all you can do is think to yourself, “What is the point?” You try to get out of bed in the morning, but you just can’t escape its almost magnetic hold over you.

So you sleep. And you sleep. And you sleep. Sleep becomes your drug of choice, and you abuse it constantly. Your old hobbies and passions no longer have the same appeal. None of them match the sense of security you feel when you’re wrapped up tight in your bed sheets. You sleep to escape the thoughts, the fear, the overwhelming sense of hopelessness and dread that seems to seep from your pores.

But when you leave the house, you keep a smile spread on your face, because you know your friends won’t understand. You feel isolated, alone, like there is no one in the world who can possibly understand the darkness. God, you wish and you pray that the pain can go away.

But it doesn’t. It gets worse, and worse, and worse. And then you think to yourself: Should I end it all? Eventually, that’s all that you can think about, that question. And more questions follow. What does it mean to be alive? Why are you here? What’s the point? You drown in these thoughts—you’re drowning, and you feel like no one is there to save you.

What a dopey thing to say; may you never know the feeling (or lack of feeling) of true depression.

That’s exactly what happens. The oddball in the “Grizzly Man” movie stopped taking his meds (he was bi-polar), and in probably the only rational thought he expressed he stopped them because he felt that highs and lows (which are compressed by medication to keep a more even keel) were part of being human, and he had no interest in living with neither of them. Unfortunately, his troubled mind ended up paying the ultimate price (as did his girlfriend).

Being at the bottom of a deep, black hole without being able to escape is how I’ve heard it described several times (by independent reporters) ....

Well, your original reply read to me like you were agreeing with the “spoiled brats” posters. If you really know what a major depressive episode feels like, I sincerely apologize.

RoosterRedux PM: "You have no fucking idea what depression is like."

Except I was employed for three years as a Ph.D candidate Diagnostic Psychologist in an inpatient facility and have had several episodes in my family.

With due respect, this is NOT just a first world problem India has the highest depression rate -- and India is definitely more spiritual than other countries. The USA, France, Netherlands and India have the highest rates according to the above -- Not much in common

There is another one that gives

I suffer from severe depression and never actually get out of it. Of course, it’s been worse for the past 2 years since my cherished husband died, because he was also a medical doctor with a practice in psychiatry.

I found a good psychiatrist here but it took 6 months with him before I had to tell him “to take charge.” He was ceding too much authority to me in deference to my late husband, and I wanted him to prescribe a med he thought suitable for me. He finally did, (the old Paxil) and Praise God, it’s working much better than Celexa.

I can’t recall the name of the most effective one, but my insurance doesn’t cover it.

RoosterRedux, you’re right about the physical exercise. I continue to wait for warm weather given that I canceled my gym membership.

God bless and keep you all.

I was depressed today and got on my rowing machine for 30 minutes. It pulled me back from the brink.

Hang tough beloved Onyx. Hang tough.
