Steve Miller Rants About 'Unpleasant' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Fly Like an Eagle songwriter says process needs to be changed 'from the top to the bottom'

He gave a warm acceptance speech on stage Friday but rocker Steve Miller's rant behind the scenes of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was anything but.

The 72-year-old musician, who performed popular hits during the ceremony including Fly Like an Eagle and The Joker, ripped into the rock hall for what he described as an "unpleasant" system.

"The whole process needs to be changed from the top to the bottom," the guitarist and revered singer-songwriter told reporters in the press room after the ceremony.

"When they told me I was inducted, they told me 'you can have two tickets — one for your wife and one for yourself. Want another one? It's $10,000, sorry that's the way it goes,'", he recounted. "I said 'I'm playing here, what about my band, what about their wives?'"

Miller also claimed there were problems with licensing agreements and with the rock hall "stealing footage."

"No, we're not going to wrap this one up — I'm going to wrap you up," he said to a public relations liaison who attempted to interrupt him.

"You go sit down over there and learn something," he said, adding that the show was close to "not happening because of the way the artists are being treated right now."

The organization issued a statement Friday afterwards.

"Rock and roll can ignite many opinions. It's what makes it so great. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was honoured to induct Steve Miller tonight and congratulates him."

There hasn’t been any R&R since the early 70s. It’s all been just crappy noise, since.

Hometown (Milwaukee) pride! I enjoyed his telling off of the RRHOF, he made his points forcefully and succinctly.

Who the Hell is GFRR? I consider myself very tuned in to rock history and never heard of GFRR.

That was PhiloBedo’s term. I assumed he meant Grand Funk Railroad.

How can Gene complain about the Rock HOF including non-rock acts?

You don’t consider KISS Rock and Roll?

Yes. They knew when to quit. But they were a kick ass rr group that had a following large enough to sell out Shea stadium , the Cow Palace and others.

I do. I like KISS and Gene. But Gene wants the RRHOF to only accept rock artists. A lot of rock music has its roots in jazz, blues, and gospel. I just think Gene has a case of the sour grapes here.

If it’s Steve Miller Band and Cheap Trick this year, might as well be, .38 Special and Air Supply next year. Pure mediocrity.

So, N.W.A. are in the Hall of Fame and The Moody Blues and ELO are not.

What a complete and utter joke.

Why would a dud like Steve Miller be inducted in the R&R HOF?

Come on! Deep Purple and Judas Priest had plenty of good music in the 80s; it was all gone by the 90s...

A lot of rock music has its roots in jazz, blues, and gospel.

I can agree with that and I can also agree that an argument can be made that artist of those musical genres do not belong in a R&R museum. I believe those music genres have their own museums dedicated to their historical greats.

As far as Rap and Hip Hop go I of an opinion that they have no place or relationship to R&R. I don’t even consider them music. It better described as poor poetry recited with a rhythm section backup.

I tried a couple times to listen, but just couldn’t. It wasn’t real R&R.
