Steve Miller Rants About 'Unpleasant' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Fly Like an Eagle songwriter says process needs to be changed 'from the top to the bottom'

He gave a warm acceptance speech on stage Friday but rocker Steve Miller's rant behind the scenes of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was anything but.

The 72-year-old musician, who performed popular hits during the ceremony including Fly Like an Eagle and The Joker, ripped into the rock hall for what he described as an "unpleasant" system.

"The whole process needs to be changed from the top to the bottom," the guitarist and revered singer-songwriter told reporters in the press room after the ceremony.

"When they told me I was inducted, they told me 'you can have two tickets — one for your wife and one for yourself. Want another one? It's $10,000, sorry that's the way it goes,'", he recounted. "I said 'I'm playing here, what about my band, what about their wives?'"

Miller also claimed there were problems with licensing agreements and with the rock hall "stealing footage."

"No, we're not going to wrap this one up — I'm going to wrap you up," he said to a public relations liaison who attempted to interrupt him.

"You go sit down over there and learn something," he said, adding that the show was close to "not happening because of the way the artists are being treated right now."

The organization issued a statement Friday afterwards.

"Rock and roll can ignite many opinions. It's what makes it so great. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was honoured to induct Steve Miller tonight and congratulates him."

Is Steve bitching about N.W.A. too being inducted? It was bad enough that Simmons was ripping on them.

Why is it called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anyway? Why can't it just be called the Music Hall of Fame?

Is this the old dried up Communist who wrote the Bernie Sanders supporter theme song “Take The Money And Run” glorifying felony robbery and murder?

From the excerpt it appears perfectly clear what he was complaining about.
"When they told me I was inducted, they told me 'you can have two tickets — one for your wife and one for yourself. Want another one? It's $10,000, sorry that's the way it goes,'", he recounted. "I said 'I'm playing here, what about my band, what about their wives?'"

RR HOF too cheap to even give tickets to his band? Except for $10K a pop??

Sounds like the people in charge knew they had a nice little gig going, controlling access to famous rock stars and getting to profit off it. IOW, the HOF is set up more to benefit its operators than either the inductees or the public.

Keep on bitchin’ me, baby. That’s how changes get made.

From Phoenix Arizona all the way to Tacoma .....

I dunno. When I see an act indicted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” I figure that’s the moment they become irrelevant.

If your favorite act isn’t in there, be glad: you can plausibly say they’re still the angry rebels who haven’t sold out.

Gene Simmons had a cow though. How can Gene complain about the Rock HOF including non-rock acts? Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and James Brown are all inductees of the Hall and they sure as Hell aren’t rockers in the traditional sense.

I'm an old fogey. I remember when people used to just ... sit ... and ... listen ... to the music.

Yes, drugs were often involved. But kids today still take a lot of drugs. But they don't listen. Today's music ( a lot of the really "successful" stuff) is basically a throbbing beat that people have on in the background while they do whatever. The singing is practically acappella: the music doesn't matter; it's a metronome. Some woman with a big voice chants some mindless lyrics and they say it's music.

Much of it is totally forgettable.

RRHoF is a pay to play scam. If it were the real deal , GFRR would have been inducted years ago.

But George Clinton is there????wtf?

IMHO, The Rock Hall of Fame is a tragic joke. Easily one of the best bass players to have ever played and written music in the past 50 years is Chris Squire who died last year. You may or may not like the music he was part of with Yes, but inarguably that band has over the years had some of the greatest musicians, and has produced iconic music, but they've never been inducted. But Blondie has.

GFRR? Didn’t they have a heyday of about 5 years, maximum?
