LOL at “... that ninney, Frank Pierce ...”. Who says politics used to be civil?

I think we can say with some confidence that, despite it's name, the Gettysburg Republican Compiler is actually a Democrat pro-slavery, anti-abolitionist paper, as illustrated by the following piece:
Note that the Compiler is here quoting favorably a Vermont Democratic paper's comments criticizing the New York Tribune's pro-abolitionist opinions.
So we might well surmise here that media bias is not an invention of our own age... ;-)

The Gettysburg Republican Compiler:

The explanation of how a pro-Democrat rag could carry the name Republican is doubtless that when the paper was first printed, circa 1819, it was in support of Jefferson's Democratic Republican party.

As the nation's political machinery gears up for its November 1856 election, we can see an interesting early development in Harrisburg, PA.
Note the top name listed as nominated for President.
We may see that name again...

The Gettysburg Adams Sentinal

I'm not certain yet of the Sentinal's political leanings.
They seem pretty down-the-middle.

And finally, it's most astonishing to learn that even in the days before Anthropogenic Global Warming and Climate Change, not all their weather was perfectly mild and predictable.
This article tells of some pretty severe weather and damage in St. Louis, Missouri:
