Once a 'majestic roundhouse' - architect Sarah Ewbank believes she's solved Stonehenge's...

Sarah Ewbank spent the last year researching the ancient monument and applying her architectural background to the site to determine what its purpose and form once might have been.

She has concluded, based on the layout of the stones, that they were used as support structures for a massive wooden frame that featured a second story for the site as well as an enormous round roof.

Ewbank argues that a roof at the monument would allow for it to have been used throughout the year which, she believes, makes more sense that it simply being a religious site used on special occasions.

"Why would you move 75 large stones just so you could dance around twice a year? If you put a roof on it you can use it all year," she told the Salisbury Journal.

Interesting idea that makes sense, but it is just conjecture. Would need proof.

Another interesting and equally valid idea!

If it were in a flood plain, this idea might have considerable merit. But I don’t think it’s in a floodplain.

It’s sort of a religious structure- it’s a smokehouse for bacon.

The discovery of bacon, understandably, inspired a religious, cultural and economic transformation of primitive man.
Who wouldn’t drag monoliths hundreds of miles if it meant having bacon?

Thanks BenLurkin. The historical British architect Inigo Jones came to a similar conclusion. Diget topic ping as well.

Valid idea? Some scientist somewhere says it is settled science and should not be questioned. And some politician somewhere wants thugs to come and shut you up for even mentioning this valid idea.

I remember years ago being very interested in Stonehenge and I was in grad school. There was an older soil study done with core samples within Stonehenge in several places and a layer of ash was present. That supports this theory (it’s not new) that there was a heavy structure on top that may have burned, but Stonehenge is likely so old that any wood present would have disappeared on top of the ground.

With that said, the mysteries of man pale in comparison to the mysteries of God! It is an interesting place to visit and pictures don’t do it the justice of standing there and wondering.

Makes sense. The entire area seems small when seen in person. It is not an arena size area, but it is more of the size of a building. Interesting theory!

There have been more theories about Stonehenge than JFK's assassination. Every year, one or two are published, each one more ludicrous than the one before.

Personally, I think it was a gay bathhouse until the Roman governor Obamus Minimum wore it out.
