Dog accidentally runs US half-marathon, finishes in an impressive seventh place

by

Early Saturday morning, Ludivine, a two-and-a-half-year-old hound dog, was let out of the house in Elkmont, Alabama, to do her business. Prone to roaming around town at will, Ludivine snuck out of the backyard and made her way to the starting area of the inaugural Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon about a quarter mile away.

Ludivine proceeded to mingle with the runners, run the entire 13.1-mile course, cross the finish line in an unofficial 1:32:56, and have a medal draped over her floppy brown ears--all without her owner, April Hamlin, realizing she had wandered off in the first place. The incident was first reported in Canadian Running Magazine.

"All I did was open the door, and she ran the race on her own accord," Hamlin, 43, told Runner's World, saying she received texts with photos of Ludivine from friends who were volunteering at the finish. "My first reaction was that I was embarrassed and worried that she had possibly gotten in the way of the other runners."

I just had to chuckle at it... reminds me of “bless the beasts and the children” from so long ago.

Thanks,

Awesome dog. And it sounds like she is BFF with everyone in town. Kind of an old time feel good small town thing pretty rare these days.

Imagine how good she might do if she’d been able to start with the other runners, instead of following them!

I love a good ignorant gentle and good natured dog above anything else not human.

I used to ask my wife “What do you suppose if you left your wife AND the dog in a closet all day long when you went out to go to work and which one would be happy to see you when you came home?” She didn’t like that at all. :o)

Loves me some doggies.

I know...that was just his regular old, non-trained self and he made 7th!

I saw a documentary on NetFlix a couple of weeks back about trappers in Siberia. They live in a village, but set out for long stretches to huts that are many miles away from the village. They were all coming into the village for a brief respite for New Year’s and the Orthodox Christmas. They showed one trapper on his snow mobile and the dog running behind him. This is at night, of course, ‘cause there is not much of a day I guess at that time of the year, and in the Siberian cold and snow. The dog ran behind the snow mobile, non stop, for a hundred miles back to the village. Not sure what breed. I think this dog was the red one. Not Husky, I guess. I don’t know if Malamutes are red sometimes. Amazing animals, though, whatever their breed.

What a great dog beats man story.

When Ludivine stopped to investigate a dead rabbit around the two-mile mark, Horvath caught back up with her. For the rest of the race, Ludivine stayed within 50 meters of Horvath, hopping on and off the course.

“One time she went over and met another dog next to the course,” Horvath said. “Later on, she went into a field with some mules and cows. Then she’d come back and run around our legs. I wondered if she was going to get tired or go back to wherever her home was.”

and no 100 dollar running shoes.

Ha! I saw that documentary too. I think it is called the “Happiest Village on Earth.”

Hard working, family oriented, God fearing, Christian Siberian folks.

Europe should bring these men over for a few weeks a year to breed...

Yep, they love no matter what! Reminds me of this from How to Win Friends and Influence People:

Why read this book to find out how to win friends? Why not study the technique of the greatest winner of friends the world has ever known? Who is he? You may meet him tomorrow coming down the street. When you get within ten feet of him, he will begin to wag his tail. If you stop and pat him, he will almost jump out of his skin to show you how much he likes you. And you know that behind this show of affection on his part, there are no ulterior motives: he doesn't want to sell you any real estate, and he doesn't want to marry you.

Did you ever stop to think that a dog is the only animal that doesn't have to work for a living? A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but love.

When I was five years old, my father bought a little yellow-haired pup for fifty cents. He was the light and joy of my childhood. Every afternoon about four-thirty, he would sit in the front yard with his beautiful eyes staring steadfastly at the path, and as soon as he heard my voice or saw me swinging my dinner pail through the buck brush, he was off like a shot, racing breathlessly up the hill to greet me with leaps of joy and barks of sheer ecstasy. Tippy was my constant companion for five years. Then one tragic night - I shall never forget it - he was killed within ten feet of my head, killed by lightning. Tippy's death was the tragedy of my boyhood.

You never read a book on psychology, Tippy. You didn't need to. You knew by some divine instinct that you can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. Let me repeat that. You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.
