Trump, who has described himself as a Presbyterian, has cited Peale and touted âThe Power of Positive Thinkingâ during interviews when asked about the role of faith in his life and whether he has ever sought Godâs forgiveness.
âThe great Norman Vincent Peale was my minister for years,â Trump told CNN last July, a sentiment he repeated in Atlanta and in Iowa during stops in Ames and Dubuque.
Peale said he became upset last fall after reading a Politico article that claimed that Norman Vincent Peale helped shape Trump.
âIt ignored the major focus and contribution of a spiritual and Christian nature that my father was making in humility and sincere desire to be helpful to other people,â John Peale said. âThereâs the power of Jesus Christ that can effect that change. I never heard of anything that came out of Trump that had anything to do with that.â
Told that Trump praised âThe Power of Positive Thinkingâ as âfantastic,â Peale said: âThereâs no content to that statement. Itâs like kids saying things are awesome.â

What he said was sloppily phrased. What he meant to say is that the Mexican regime dumps a lot of people on us, many of them good, hardworking people (although here illegally), and among them are rapists, murderers, even terrorists.
But because of the way he phrased it, the good ones sounded like an afterthought. He should have done more to clarify that.
He also backtracked about McCain, after saying something that can, at best, be argued to have been sloppily phrased.
But is he going to do the same thing in international negotiations, phrasing things in a way that opens him to a damaging interpretation, even if that isn’t what he meant?
There is a lot of similarity between Peale and Osteen, yes. They can be said to teach a similar brand of Christianity.
More of the same game of attack the front runner. If Cruz were leading instead of Trump they would attack his deep christian faith and of his father the pastor and how too christian Cruz is to be president. Yeh we know the score and mouth foaming LIEberal claptraps.
The author is obviously Jewish.
Babylonian Jews (Jews outside Israel) are immediately suspect in everything they purport within the media vocation.
Everything!
His TV programs celebrate excellence.
What's wrong with that?
Good points. But you don’t get it. Trump is beyond politics and humility. He is too macho for any of that stuff.
I don’t agree with all of rush’s characterizations but some of it is dead right. You have people so pissed off they would even vote for Donald Trump. They are desperate to flail out at anyone and anything. So they rally behind trump. Of course trump loves to deal so he will deal with the dems and we will get all sorts of crap headed our way. Some we may like and some we may hate. Who friggin knows?
Thanks!
Trump has said he has never asked for foregiveness. No Christian would ever mke such a statement. Can’t get more arrogant than that.
Trump is a malignant narcissist; just like Obama.
No way!!!!!!! I bet you 2 Corinthians he didn't!!!!!!!!!
Everyone knows that someone’s son always speaks for the father. Especially deceased ones.
Great ad!
Norman Vincent Peale was Trump’s main spiritual mentor??? Well that explains his “faith”.
I like Trump’s no holds barred approach to the hot button issues of the day, but I detest his nit picking and petulance when grousing against anyone with the temerity to dare question him and his “principles” in any manner. For example, is he terrified that Cruz might really be a secret agent for CANADA, the country with which we share the longest unprotected border in the world??? Cruz was born in Canada, NOT in the Soviet Union or Cuba or Venezuela or China or even Kenya. Sheesh. Plus a person’s values are formed long AFTER birth, not by the physical location at the time of their actual birth.
“Religion” indeed.
Concerning eternity, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Norman Vincent Peale = Jeremiah Wright.
“if one were to ask Donald Trump’s fans what they like most about him, it is highly unlikely a profound streak of honest humility would be mentioned.”
Funny, that’s exactly what I see. And I see it on display with normal people. But his peers in the realm of politics and punditry seem to think “humility” means they can do or say ANYTHING to him, and he must bow meekly and maybe mumble a quiet denial.
Punching these bullies in the face back as hard as they do him is awesome.
His humility is the way he always, unfailingly, deals with subordinates and voters.
And when he punches McCain, Kelly, etc,,,. he is doing it on the behalf of normal people who are constantly being told how uneducated, stupid, and racist we are.
Yes it is. Particularly for IOWA where it is running
Trump has to be more careful when speaking off the cuff. There wa the remark about Mexicans, badly phrased, and about McCain, also badly phrased.
There was the thing about seeing video of thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11. Apparently, he conflated the video of thousands of Middle Eastern Muslims with the news reports of some number of Muslims in Jersey City and Paterson celebrating.
I’ve defended him on these things, but the sloppiness of how they were said concerns me. I am a bit concerned that he’d go to some international thing — say, the G*, and say something off the cuff that can be similarly misinterpreted.
A malignant narcissist? You mean the current occupant of the WH? If Trump does the right things as president he can have all the mirrors long and tall he wishes.
The famous quote:
"I find Paul appealing and Peale appalling."
I believe that it was first uttered by Adlai Stevenson but I like it anyway - clever and insightful.
Norman Vincent Peale was not just a theologian he was also a business and ethics thinker/authority. He could well have helped shape Donald Trump.
He helped write one of the best books I ever read concerning ethics in business. I first read his book in 1988, a friend loaned me the book, as I was leaving a company I worked for 14 years for. I left over disrespectful treatment of the old owner of the business by new owners.
Norman Vincent Peale (wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking”) and Kenneth Banchard (who co-author “The One Minute Manager”) co-authored:
“The Power of Ethical Management”
ISBN 0-688-07062-0 (copy right 1988)
“There is no Right way to do a Wrong Thing”
“Integrity Pays, You don’t have to cheat to Win”
“The Numbers can all be right and the decision still be Wrong”
(small 140 page book)
