freerepublic | Jan 1, 2016 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/01/2016 1:18:03 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Here in the Bluegrass state the winter has been exceptionally warm. One of our quince bushes is in full bloom and some of the early bulb flowers are sticking their heads up. About 60 days too early for any of that to happen.

6 degrees here with lots of snow on the ground....

my amaryllis did well, my pointsetta looks like its dying a quick death...probably not enough light in these dreary winter days...and my Christmas cactus thriving...

the days are getting a tiny bit longer every day...

looking forward to the best garden EVER...of course I always say that....

It’s been very warm here in Richmond, VA. We’ve even had some 50 degree nights. Nice to have various Camellias blooming in the yard.

Happy New Year gardening FRiends! In the 20’s here in west Michigan. Everything is dormant here. Been looking at pictures of last year’s garden, my best. I watched The Secret Garden last night. A nice movie for gardeners. it will be fun to look at seed catalogs and do some planning. Prayers continue for our Johnny.

(wanted to reply yesterday, but had to go) It’s just awful here right now- cold & rainy. For days. DH is better, but I’m still sick.

SEEDS! Ordering seeds would definitely help!

We’re on our way to Spring now.

I have a question here. What does spaghetti squash taste like? I’m getting ready to buy seeds for this summer and I’m thinking about planting it.

It has very little flavor. Good with spaghetti sauce as a low carb replacement. Caution though, I planted one to try it here and wound up with over 30 squash. Gave most of them away. I was happy with 4 or 5. Neighbors also liked it with roasted peppers and roasted dry tomatoes, olive oil and some feta.

it was so hot and dry last year my garden did so so....what saved it for me was some free squash we found advertised for free on the side of the road, and craigs list that got us several containers of free concord grapes.

btw, I finally ground up my tomato odds and ends that I had dried and put in the freezer.....it really does work...

Merry New Year!

I still have a mountain of kale thriving in the garden and a good bit of green salad too. Last time I looked the garlic was up but only 40% or so of what I planted. Hopefully the rest is just lurking under the mulch.

I spent a couple days in my workshop re-fitting a hay spike that was previously used on another tractor to the loader bucket on Nanner. Now there will be no chance of Mrs. Augie's horses starving to death if the weather turns bad.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone.
Central Texas is cool and dreary looking today. Our cabbages are still filling out, but I’m thinking of pulling some greens from one of the keyhole gardens and get it ready for spring plantings. My in-ground raised garden is ready for compost, as is some of the syrup pots. We’re thinking of doing various tomatoes in some, and I want to do 2 cantaloupes in one, they will be climbers. The raised gardens here at home will be composted and ready for spring planting, soon.
Prayers for those in need. Extra strong prayers for johnny and Arrow Head.
