Is climate change to blame for the record warmth this Christmas?
Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC ^ | December 21, 2015 | David Epstein

This week, with 60-degree or warmer weather for Christmas Eve lasting into Christmas Day, you may feel a little guilty if you’re enjoying it.

You may also be asking yourself if this unseasonal warmth is climate change in action.

When the weather gets weird, we often have strong reactions to what’s happening out there. It may seem logical that if, somehow, humans hadn’t spewed trillions of metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past century, we'd have a cold, snowy December as has often been the case in the past. Right?

Wrong. This Isn't Climate Change. There have been many snowless Decembers before. Climate change isn’t responsible for this warm December. This year, it's connected to a strong El Nino and the polar vortex, which is whirling around the top of the planet so fast that the cold air can’t get out and escape south.

El Nino, which is warmer than average in the equatorial area off Peru, is adding a lot of heat to the atmosphere. It’s peaking right now, and it’s also going to spike the global temperature this year. 2015 will be warmer than any year on record, by quite a bit.

Here's more accurate way to think about how anthropogenic climate change is playing a role in our weather: Without humans, perhaps the temperatures forecast this week would be slightly cooler. Perhaps.

Over the coming decades, climate models predict fall-like weather extending later and spring-like weather arriving earlier. But there’s a lot more research needed into individual weather events and climate change...

Nearly three-quarters of the US population will experience temperatures over 60 degrees on Thursday. Records will fall from Florida to Maine

Just like CC was blamed for the epic snowfall in Boston last year.

Before I ever heard of Algore I remember heard about global cooling. We were all going to “freeze in the dark” ya’ll! I think that was the 70’s and when it didn't happen, we heard about global warming. Being a Texas I was really excited and happy about the cooling, the warming? Not so much.

I remember playing outside during recess when I was in the 5th grade without even a sweater on.

It was on Dec. 5th, maybe 1953. I remember it because it was my little sister’s birthday, and she was getting ice skates, and I was worrying about how disappointed she was going to be with the weather.

This was in northern Ohio.

I’m about half convinced the weather irregularities are related to experimental weapons.

When I hear Rubio speak, I get the feeling that I am listening to an actor. I don't doubt that he means what he says but the perfection and lack of hesitation and the emotion he puts into it seems false.

That and he looks like a little boy who hasn't grown to match his ears yet.

Don't misunderstand, I will vote for the Republican nominee whoever it is and as a Texan I know that the primary is over before we get to vote in it. Those first few states get to choose

I don’t and I don’t care!

Mid 1980's, we lived in Northeast Connecticut and had temps around mid 60's at Christmas.

Asked a friend of ours who was a native born Yankee if he had ever seen a winter like it before. His answer..."Only once."

"When was that?" I asked.

"This year!" he replied.

After that mild December, Old Man Winter showed up with a vengeance and stayed until mid-May!
