Large dogs are held in high esteem for a variety of reasons: for their large stature, their strength, and their protective nature and keen watchdog abilities. If you're looking for a reliable canine defender, it's important to consider not only the physical attributes of a dog breed, but its temperament, as well.
Using data from Animal Planet, PetBreeds found the 29 best guard dogs and ranked them by popularity, according to the 2014 AKC popularity rankings. (Three dog breeds that had no ranking were put at the bottom of the list.) Criteria used included that the breed must possess a strong watchdog ability and be known protectors. Only purebreds that were classified as being large or giant and to bark minimally were included.

I have had 3 on the list and agree they are great. Have had Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren and German Shepherd.
In case you want to doggie ping.
No list? Not going to do the 29 clicks.
I will add this: if you want a dog that will let you know when something is happening on your property, buy a Chihuahua. I worked on a particular farm, and she put the big dogs to shame.
No Rottweiler?
Boycott Animal Planet, the loony, liberal, butt sniffing, booger picking communists! =P
BS. My Boxer will die for me, and do some major damage.
Yep, they alert me and my gun will handle the rest if needed.
The ovcharka or caucasian mountain dog is not on the list but the poodle is.
A Chihuahua is a redneck burglar alarm, good for your car as well.
Well, it didn’t actually take long to click through. As I hoped, the German Shepherd was number 1.
We have a German Shepherd bloodhound mix. She has the instincts and intelligence of a German Shepherd, and the nose of a bloodhound. Great dog, and very loving.
All seem reasonable except the staffordshire terrier, which has a nasty documented history of killing its owners or others unrelated to any guarding of the family. Some of them are great, some are deadly and there’s no way to tell the difference until one day, doggie snaps and/or kills. As guard dogs, they aren’t that easily trained. They are less likely to bark to protect the property and are more likely to attack without warning. I think a yappy dog would be better than a staffordshire terrier.
Boxers are the best! There are better guard dogs but boxers are the best all around dog for me. They are perfect in my eyes.
Drive you nuts in the process. LOL
I still remember, lol. The Chihuahua running like an arrow shot from a bow, the big dogs behind . . . and me, thinking “oh, crap.”
We have a German Shepherd. Only 10 months old and already a great guard dog.
This is true.
My smallish Portuguese Podengo Medio maintains watch from atop the flat file cabinet in my art room, which faces the lane, and it’s she who sounds the first alert of anyone approaching the house.
*Then* the Dobes run to the windows and put in their two cents.
It’s a good system, really.
;D
