Dodgers' Vin Scully can't imagine he would return after next season
Los Angeles Times ^ | November 28, 2015 | Steve Dilbeck

Posted on 11/28/2015 12:10:35 PM PST by EveningStar

It is not what anyone in the Los Angeles area wants to believe. When Vin Scully first said in August that next season would realistically be his last broadcasting the Dodgers, willful thinking became rampart ...

Scully [turns] 88 Sunday and has reached the point where he cannot envision a scenario where he returns beyond the 2016 season.

"I really can't see that I would come back," Scully said. "Sooner or later, you have to be realistic. I've done it for a long, long time. I've done reasonably well at it. But I don't want to stay on any longer than I feel I should ...

One of the best, especially when doing local TV broadcasts. He always gives the opposing team a lot of air time. He fills in the airtime with inside info without being boring or fact regurgitation. He has such a long history, and can call on that history to make the game seem real and fresh.

Speaking as a Cardinal fan, it just won’t be the same.

Even though a rabid Giants fan, I watch Dodgers home games to enjoy Vin’s call, and he has’t lost a step. But it would be good for both him and baseball to designate next year (or, heck, the year after!) as his “retirement season” so fans and players can express their thanks for decades of superlative work, and Vin can fully enjoy the laurels and congratulations he has earned. May he live to 100 or more with mind and enthusiasm intact!

The end of an era. One of the greatest baseball broadcasters ever.

Vin’s mentor was Red Barber, who also mentored Ernie Harwell and Phil Rizzuto.

About 7 years ago, I flew out to LA for a meeting. I took the red eye and was tired when I got to LAX, so I found a place to get some coffee.

I went to the counter, bought the coffee, and was given a cup. They pointed me to the machine.

I turned around and it said “FARMER JOHN”. I started chuckling because in my head I heard Vin Scully talking about “Farmer John coffee”.

I started listening to him when the Dodgers moved to L.A. To me he is what a baseball announcer is supposed to sound like—you can’t tell who is leading the game by the tone of his voice. Growing up with Vinney has spoiled me—other announcers, some quite good in their own right, just don’t make the grade.

His call of Koufax’s perfect game against the Cubs is available on line and is classic. No one seems to remember the Cub’s pitcher threw a one-hitter in that game—and the Dodgers’ run was scored without a hit.

I have an idea I would like to act on, but ran out of options, as I can think of them. Last year I sent Fox a message: let Scully call the first 2-3 innings of the all-star game. Two weeks ago I sent a letter to the LA Times sports section. They didn’t print it and no response. Anybody like this and any suggestions.

Bubble-pop time.....Farmer John is the meat company that makes the Dodger Dogs — Farmer Brothers is an institutional coffee purveryor which virtually controls the beverage in SoCal. Their dispensers have their name.

I didn’t realize that, I will have to check it out. What I liked about Scully, was even though he was announcing for the Dodgers, he always managed to bring the other club into the game. Highlighting some of their history and accomplishments in such a natural way, that you as a listener, didn’t realize until the inning was over, that he had hardly mentioned the Dodgers at all.
As a Cardinals fan I just appreciated that element of his broadcast. And he was never shy about giving credit to a player or team if they were better than the Dodgers.
The game itself was bigger to Scully than any team or player.
He will not be replaced.

The Dodgers' last link to Brooklyn.

You forgot Tommy Lasorda, who is still employed by the Dodgers and just finished his 67th year on the payroll (albeit on their minor league affiliates until '54). Vinnie's a mere piker at only 65 years.

Koufax is no longer employed, except perhaps with a spring training consultant honorarium. But do you know the Lasorda/Koufax link?

The Dodgers released Tommy to make room on the roster for Sandy.

Sorry, I’m mistaken to say Lasorda’s been on the payroll all 67 years—he left and returned.

This is good on Scully’s part. There have been announcers, just like players who’ve stayed past the point that they needed to retire. Harry Carey became a parody of himself. It was sad. Scully is making the right move.
