Just bought a Tokarev TT

Just bought a Tokarev TT. Interesting pistol. It's been called the "Soviet 1911" and after disassembly and cleaning I can see why. Mine is a romanian model with a production date of 1956. To meet import regulations a frame mounted trigger safety has been added. It's fairly crisp and positive functioning, but just the same I don't think I'll be using it a lot. Most literature I've read on the TT doesn't recommend carry with a round chambered anyway. The Soviets carried them chamber empty. I'm looking forward to getting some range time with it when possible. I heard they're fairly accurate as-is and require little tuning. The price is what attracted me. Out the door was about $250. That came with a military flap-style holster and cleaning rod. What it didn't come with was a spare magazine. I've heard it said that this wouldn't make a good concealed carry gun due to the fact it's single action only, which I can certainly understand. Pity though, as its's such a slim weapon with a single stack mag. The ballistics I've heard are good, with an 86 gr. bullet going out at 1500~1700 Fps. I've been told ammo is tough to find, but with a couple of phone calls I was able to locate a box for $20 and they were JHP to boot. The only thing frustrating me is spare mags. Other gun gurus out there, I welcome your comments and experiences with this weapon.

I have owned several but none were the Romanian model. Surplus ammo was cheap and available back when I owned them. I don’t ever recall seeing commercial HP but it must be out there.

Magazines are plentiful but for some reason are always fairly expensive. At least that was the situation 20 years ago.

Mine were all reliable and accurate but that was with fmj ammo.

I think the ballistics are not as hot as what you describe, maybe some of the hot Czech ammo made for the CZ-52 but it is too hot for the Tokarev.

We have three old Makarov 9mm autos...never have even loaded them.

As long as they’re sound, you should go out and burn some ammo up. 9x18 Makarov isn’t hard to find.

Does that come in the old soviet army “spam cans” , like the 7.62x54 russian I get for my mosin? Good stuff but corrosive. You gotta watch out for the lacquered rounds as well. If you shoot it a lot the lacquer from the rounds melts and starts to foul the chamber. That’s why a rubber mallet is part of my tool kit for the mosin, to “encourage” the bolt to cycle properly.

The Tokarov is a nice gun, Romanian is as good as any commercial production model.

The 7.62x 25 bottle-neck cartridge packs a punch. You can buy it in large quantities, but a lot of that on the market is corrosive mil-surp, so remember to give the gun a good cleaning if you use that stuff.

Boy, I’m amazed at the price. That mil-surp spam can was going for about 8 bucks 5 years ago.

I have one, with a tip of the hat to Travis McGee for his recommendation.

The upshot: loud, surprisingly accurate and effective. S&B ammo is clean and generally available. Bulgarian milsurp is dirty, corrosive and hot. Clean every nook and cranny after you shoot that stuff.

Change all the springs. Wolf makes a complete set. Enjoy.

Just looked at the JHP I bought today. It’s Serbian. I also own a mosin, so I know all about corrosive milsurp. I’m a law enforcement armorer so my stuff gets cleaned to my own professional standards. My trainers taught me to do it right, or not at all.

According to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TT_pistol
Norinco made their version in 9mm and called it the Tokarev Model 213.

I have two of them.

They are fairly accurate. I passed my concealed carry shooting test with one.

One of them had a jamming issue, it would fire then lock up solid. Had to pound on it with a rubber hammer to get it free. I cleaned it completely, then took a magic marker and covered all the internal parts. Fired it until it jammed again, took it apart and polished the areas where it where the marking rubbed off. Works great now.

Mine are very cheaply made, not worth taking to a gun smith.

Very fun to shoot. Reasonably accurate.

Don’t like commie guns, you have to clean the neck hairs off the muzzle.

Mine is over 100 yrs. old. Great great grandfather’s
Smith & Wesson revolver he carried on Tenn. River when he
worked as a lightskeeper on the river. It was rough on the
river back then and may still be.

The hairs come off fairly easily. The smell of borscht from the grips is a little harder to eradicate.
